Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey and thank you very much. We’ve been doing very well, Simon and I both, considering the pandemic and everything. There are so many people going through the worst time of their lives right now and we’re actually doing ok so we’re feeling very grateful and lucky. We have been writing a lot and we have people in our corner betting on us, now more than ever, so it’s an exciting year for us.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Floating”?
I’m very glad you asked! We actually wrote it a while back and even released an earlier version of it but this new version is the one that I think will have the most impact. It started out as an idea from the people we work with to go back to this song and make it the most it could be because we’re all still very fond of it and at the time of the first release we weren’t as aware of production as we are now. I instantly thought it was a great idea and I’m always excited about “perfecting” things and even though there is no such thing as perfect I feel like we came closer this time around.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Floating is about escapism and someone trying to get away from love and life by floating off inside. Without getting too personal I had just gone through a break up and I was finding it hard to escape that person and everything going on so I ended up feeling like the only way out was to escape inside, dream, live in a fantasy…or whatever you want to call it. That was my state of mind for a long time and all that emotion was ultimately channeled into this song. Sometimes you just want to escape this world for a minute, you know?
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
We actually do have a video out right now! Just like the song we made it quite a while back. We did some touching up and put it out together with this new version of Floating. If you’re reading this and haven’t seen it yet I think you should go check it out because it’s really dope. There’s a bunch of big rocks and houses and stuff like that floating in the sky – it’s pretty cool.
How was the recording and writing process?
This is a song that started with Simon (the more silent half of Slide). Simon can be very mysterious and sporadic with his songwriting. Mostly we just send rough demos back and forth piecing a song together brick by brick. However, every once in a while Simon blows my mind and sends me something super well crafted and explosive that he’s been tinkering with on the side. Floating was one of those instances where he just sent me the song out of the blue and I was like “ok this is very cool lets work on this NOW”. I added my lyrics to it, changed some melodies and then we recorded it in my parents’ basement.
How has BROCKHAMPTON and Post Malone influenced your writing?
We’re very inspired by modern stuff like Post Malone, Glass Animals and Twenty One Pilots but also a lot of older bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and early Coldplay. Slide is in the combination of those two worlds. We want to bring back all those things we love from the past but in a modern context and with our own spin on it. We’re like… really into bands and the chemistry of rock bands but we want to do it our way – we want to be nostalgic while still carving out our place in pop. I think people are starting to catch on to that idea and that makes me happy because it’s really the center of what Slide is.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely. It’s coming along nicely. We’ve come a long way already but we’re taking our time making sure it’s the best we’ve ever done. I know it will be. I am lucky in the sense that I always think our next stuff will be our best stuff because it’s a feeling that keeps me going and writing a lot. I can’t wait to put out more music but at the same time we’re going for something really really good this time so we’re trying not to rush it.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
As far as releases go I’d like to be mysterious and say we have a lot of stuff planned but I can’t tell you exactly when you’ll get to hear it. So yeah…I’ll choose to not speak on any particular date yet but it’s definitely around the corner and I can’t wait to share it with you!
What else is happening next in Slide’s world?
We´re doing a lot of rehearsing and writing to make sure we’re ready to come out swinging when everything opens up again. Simon and I are always thinking of ways to improve our live set and make it more interesting and we’re always working on new songs trying to make them the most Slide they can be. In short, we’re just so happy to get to do what we do and we can’t wait to release more music, play live and meet everyone who listens to our music.
