Hi Bryce, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Fantastic! Thank you for asking. Excited that people finally get to hear “Ruthless”!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Ruthless”?
This song is about turning the tables on someone who’s wronged you. I used to be a big people pleaser and would put other peoples’ needs over my own. “Ruthless” is about saying “Hell no, I don’t deserve to be treated this way—what if I treated you this way? How do you like it?”
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I just got over a really terrible breakup and found myself rebounding with a new boy. He was more into me than I was into him and he would always try to gaslight me into doing whatever he wanted. I was so sick of being disrespected and disregarded. I wanted to be the savage Casanova for once. Thus, “Ruthless” was born.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
We are filming the music video in Pennsylvania this weekend. It’s inspired by the horror movie It Follows. It’s my first video with choreography so I’m super excited, but a little nervous.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing it came super quickly. I was playing with chords on my keyboard and the “No I’m not the type to do this” hook came right away. I knew exactly the kind of vibe it needed and the type of vocal effects I wanted. Alex Flagstad, who produced it, knocked it out of the park on the first draft.
What role does Washington play in your music?
A lot of the production on the new EP is inspired by the songs my friends and I would dance to when we would go out on the weekends. One track is called “Town.” It’s a dance banger named after this amazing DC gay club that closed a few years back. It was the setting for so many fun and cathartic nights.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, the plan is to release an EP by the end of the year. More singles will be coming this summer. I have big plans for visuals as well. My brilliant director Belinda Shao and I have been scheming for a while now.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I have the title picked out, but I’m going to keep it secret for now. There may be clues in “Ruthless”’s promo pictures though…
What are some of the stories you are seeking to explore with your new material?
The common thread in the new tracks is looking at events in my past and asking myself “Was everything really as rosy as it seemed?”
What else is happening next in Bryce Bowyn’s world?
This summer you can expect remixes, videos, more music, and, if all goes well in the world, some live performances by the end of the year.
