INTERVIEW: Chasing Shadows

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been really good thank you! It’s been a difficult year for musicians, but we’ve kept going, kept writing and kept counting down the days until we can get back out on stage!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Runaways”?

I can! I was inspired a lot by Bruce Springsteen songs, and the way they tell a story, so I wanted to write one about a young couple who wanted to start over, but were going about it the wrong way. I wanted the song and the lyrics to really tell a story, and I hope it does that!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not really, I was messing around with different tunings on the guitar, and found one I liked. I also wanted to keep it as simple as possible. The story behind the lyrics was just a story that I wanted to write about, so I wouldn’t say it was necessarily inspired by any event in particular, more just a story I liked the sound of.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

We had plans to make a video that told the story of the song, but because of lockdowns and all that, we just couldn’t make it work. We’d already sat on this song for nearly a year, so we thought it was about time we put it out, so chose to make a lyric video to accompany it. Who knows, we might revisit this song and make the video we wanted to when everything begins to get back to a bit of normality.

Why naming the album after this song in particular?

When we decided to put these tracks together as an EP, it just kind of stuck, so that’s what we went with – I wish it was a more interesting story, but I’m afraid that’s how it got its name!

How was the recording and writing process?

As with most of our tracks, it started off as an acoustic demo I sent over to the lads, and from there we build up on it in practice. It went through a few changes but we were really pleased with how it built up. We took it to the studio (our second home) to the wonderful Nino at Amp Recording Studio and continued to make it in to the track you hear today, and we’re really proud of it.

How has your personal journey with your own health has influence both your music and this album in particular?

In a way, music is my therapy, and I use it to express how I’m feeling and to tell a story. Sometimes the song will be a very personal one, and tell a story directly related to me, sometimes it’ll be inspired by something I’ve seen, heard or done. The songs on this EP aren’t directly inspired by my journey, but songs on our previous EP’s, such as Open Your Eyes or Life, definitely are.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

This one was just a story I wanted to tell – as I mentioned before, I wanted to write a song that told a story, and I wanted the lyrics to really have an impact. With this one, I was inspired to write about two people stuck in a dead-end town or job, trying to make a better life for themselves – something that I can imagine a lot of people have felt. In this story, they don’t go about it the right way, and end up making a series of bad choices. We’ll write something happier next time, I promise!

What else is happening next in Chasing Shadows’ world?

We’re just excited to get back out gigging again, and we’ve had our first two gigs of the year confirmed, where we’ll be supporting Toploader on 3rd Octobber in our hometown of Rhyl (we’re really looking forward to that!) and then following that up on 9th October where we’ll be playing FOCUS Wales, which will be excellent too! On top of that, we’re back to rehearsing, writing and recording, and we’ll have new music out before you know it!
