Why Are Recording Studios Expensive?

A recording studio is a facility that is specialized to record sound. But that’s not all a recording studio does. Inside a recording studio, you can mix, produce, change, and just play with music as you want. It is a recording studio where one can record songs, mix songs and produce them. Other recording studios also specialize in voice-over and voice acting productions.

Why are recording studios used?

They are kind of essential in order to have good quality sound recorded. If you want to make music, do voice-over work, or record any type of music or song, a studio is essential. Not only do they have specialized equipment for recording sound, but studios are specially for acoustics in mind. Sound doesn’t easily penetrate the studio, so only the important bits are getting captured when you are recording. With this purpose in mind, one builds a studio taking care of the architecture and the choice of the paint. So while you can buy a home with a recording studio if you have the money, most of us don’t want to put that much of an investment in a studio. Even building a studio can get really expensive.

That is why most recording studios rent out their premises to those who need it. One can rent a recording studio by the hour. Rates can range from $30/hr for really budget studios to all way up to $100/hr, and higher for studios that come with the best acoustics and equipment. The median rate for studio rentals is about $65/hr to $100/hr, but they aren’t as sparse as budget studios, and neither are they built for perfection like higher-end studios.

As you can see, even the budget studios aren’t that cheap. Rates can quickly rack up, considering that it takes about an hour to record a song and another hour or so to mix and master it.

So if studios are just big boxes with some unique design, then why are they so expensive? Wouldn’t it be better to just rent all the required equipment and record somewhere else?

The Answer

The reasons why studios are expensive are the same reasons why we use studios in the first place. Studios provide the best place to record any sound. Studios enhance acoustics and prevent any “sound leaks” from the recording room. Designing buildings in such a way and having such a large space is expensive, especially in cities where there are already many studios. You need a studio to be close to the heart of where people are making music, which is often hard to get. Studios need a large amount of space as well just to provide the minimum services.

They have the tools and equipment necessary for you to produce the best music possible. Equipment and instruments that are not only expensive but fragile and heavy. This makes carrying those pieces of equipment hard.  That’s why artists use rentals at Mack Sennett because they know using a studio like this will give them the best music possible.
