Today, Tokyo-based producer Yoshinori Hayashi releases a new single, “I Believe In You,” from his forthcoming album, Pulse of Defiance, out next Friday, April 9th on Smalltown Supersound. It’s the follow-up to lead single “Touch,” which “signals a voyage through labyrinthian jungles of the Tokyo producer’s making, one where splendor looms at every corner” (The FADER). Album closer “I Believe In You” is built from staccato, percussive beats, and echoes of sampled vocals. It’s a taste of Pulse of Defiance’s ecstatic jungle breaks, club-ready techno, and free jazz’s unpredictable gait.

Pulse of Defiance is an outstanding statement, expanding Hayashi’s ever-growing world of sound and showcasing his musical versatility in the process. It’s the latest and most fascinating step in Hayashi’s still-blooming career—a half-decade of fantastically quixotic output that’s established him as one of electronic music’s most fascinating aural conjurers. After a string of releases on esteemed labels like Lovers Rock, Going Good, and JINN, Hayashi made his Smalltown Supersound debut with 2019’s Ambivalence, his first full-length album, and later followed up with last year’s Y.
