INTERVIEW: Niki Tonik

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Equinox”?

This song celebrates the cycles of nature and of life. It offers a fresh perspective on spring and new beginnings through a whimsical dream-pop perspective.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Cosmic events, such as the equinoxes of course and the different seasons, inspired the lyrics for this song and we thought it would be perfect to release the day before the spring equinox.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes we do have something very special planned for the video actually and I’m really looking forward to see it come to life 🙂

How was the recording and writing process?

TMGMusic wrote and produced this song so all the credit there goes to him. He wanted me to sing on it, which I was really happy about because it feels very special to me. That’s pretty much how it came together and I’m grateful that the result of our first duet turned out to be “Equinox.”

What was it like to work with TMGMusic and how did that relationship develop?

He listened to one of my songs on SoundCloud and ended up reaching out to me via Instagram. I listened to some of his music as well and heard that he was really talented songwriter, artist and musician. That sparked my interest enough to want to work together and that collaboration resulted in him producing over half the songs on my recently released first album Write On Time. The musical bond between was very strong and it also felt like we had definitely known each other before, maybe from previous lifetimes or planets or something, and that definitely contributed to the comfortability between us.

How much did he get to influence the song?

Since he wrote it I’d say he influenced it quite a bit 🙂

What role does Mount Shasta play in your music?

The first track on my album, also titled “Write On Time,” was influenced pretty heavily by Mount Shasta as was the video for another song on the album Delicate. Other than that I think it more influences my personality, health and well-being which ultimately affects my music.

How has Babyface and Sade influenced your writing?

I’m not sure how much of a influence Babyface has had on my writing but I very much appreciate him saying that he thought my songwriting was excellent and that my voice reminded him of Sade. I definitely do love her music and voice. “By Your Side” is one of my favorite songs, so it really was a compliment in the highest regard.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes for sure. This summer there will absolutely be more new music and possibly a remix of one of my existing songs coming out. Stay tuned!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

All I can say is summer 🙂
