CSI: Vegas Plays the Odds in New Revival Series for CBS

How many CSI spinoffs have there been by this point; four, ten, a hundred? Somewhere out in the vast Hollywood wilderness I envision a cold, steel-gray fortress where, inside, a band of demented Keebler Elves masquerading as scriptwriters happily bang away on their old Underwood typewriters in pursuit of yet another iteration of the original 2000 CSI series. Above their tiny figures loom their ViacomCBS overseers in best Pulp Fiction-gimp fashion, a bullwhip at the ready lest any of the elves get some bright idea about whipping up a batch of cookies or an original idea that expands beyond their all-important franchise.

Alright, the above is more than an over-exaggeration; truth of the matter is that ye olde scribbler of words has more than enjoyed the various and sundry versions of CSI that have, like a comfortable pair of Chuck Taylor’s, remained a constant and comforting pal over the decades. Like an uber-cheesy episode of Ghost Adventures, I keep coming back for more from this venerable series. And so does the show’s home network CBS, according to the always prescient Hollywood Reporter.

Reported this very morning is the news that CBS is rolling the dice – Woka-Woka – with a revival of their flagship series CSI in the form of CSI: Vegas which is set to reunite the show’s former cast William Petersen (the actor I’ll always associate with my all-time fave film Young Guns II), Jorja Fox (The West Wing, ER) and Wallace Langham (Ford v Ferrari).

In a press release,  CBS Big Wheel (and Entertainment president) Kelly Kahl said that “Twenty-one years ago, we launched CSI and watched in awe as this new cinematic series launched an entire genre and became a groundbreaking juggernaut that still has global resonance today. We are thrilled to welcome the next generation of forensic criminalists to the CSI brand and unite them with the legendary characters from the past who we still love, including the extraordinary Billy Petersen and Jorga Fox. Crime-fighting technology has advanced dramatically over the last several years, and combined with classic CSI storytelling, we can’t wait to watch this new CSI team do what they do best: follow the evidence.”

Congrats to CBS for “reuniting the band.” Vents will – with very little snark (promise!) – keep you posted on any new developments for CSI: Vegas.
