Vitamin B9: Deficiency V/S Toxicity

Vitamin B9 is a water-soluble vitamin that is found in many foods, ranging from plant sources to dairy products. Vitamin B9 is also known as folic acid or folate and has various supplemental forms available. 

Food sources of Folic acid:

  • Among dairy products, the ones rich in folic acid are, fortifies milk, yogurt, and cheese. Eggs have also a good amount of folic acid and proteins. 
  • Fruits that contain folic acid in tremendous amounts are avocado, banana, orange, papaya, kiwi, and many more citrous and fibrous fruits.
  • Dry fruits also are good sources of folic acid, such as walnuts, almonds, nuts and seeds, sunflower seeds and peanuts, etc.
  • Vegetables rich in folic acid are beetroot, spinach, turnip, broccoli, okra, asparagus, brussel sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, potatoes, and peas. 
  • Fortified cereal also contains vitamin B9, such as cakes, crackers, bakeries, etc. 

All these foods are good for having a regular intake of vitamin B9, however, if you can’t have access to these or your folic acid requirements are not fulfilled by the food you can also opt for a folic acid supplement.

Vitamin B9 deficiency:

The lack of vitamin B9 in your body may put you at risk for various health conditions. You may be obtaining a good amount of Vitamin B9 in your diet but due to some diseases, the vitamin does not get absorbed in your blood from the food.

Anemia:

  • Megaloblastic anemia is a type of anemia when there is a fewer number of red blood cells in the body, but the cells have an abnormally large size. It occurs as a result of the failure of folic acid absorption in the GI tract.
  • Pernicious anemia is another type that is also caused by the GIT failure to absorb vitamin B9 or convert it into an active form.

Erectile dysfunction:

  • Erectile dysfunction is also known as impotence in men is the inability to achieve a healthy erection. This occurs when the oxygenated blood flow to the genital tissues is compromised and there is less than normal blood that flows into the penile sinuses. 
  • It can occur because of folic acid deficiency in your body, as the blood cells lose the capability to transport oxygen to the target tissues. The penile tissue also doesn’t get enough of the blood supply.

Therefore it is recommended to consult a physician before taking any folic acid supplements. The symptoms of folic acid toxicity include,

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Sleep disorders
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Stomach upset
  • Behavior changes
  • Skin reaction
  • Seizures, gas
  • Excitability
