Hi Stella, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m fortunate to be doing well even in such difficult times. I’m just trying to keep as busy as possible with virtual performances, interviews, industry meetings, songwriting and co-writes in these crazy, uncertain times. Staying really busy is my solution to staying sane!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Before You Leave”?
“Before You Leave” is my debut single that was just released on March 12th. It was such an amazing experience to have it arranged and produced by Ned Ginsburg and mixed at the studio where Lady Gaga did her earliest recordings. Being able to share my music with the world is the greatest feeling. This song has such a universal message, especially now in the pandemic. It focuses on the deep desire to have just one more moment with someone you have lost.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It has been such a difficult year for all of us with the Pandemic. The amount of loss is overwhelming. And not even being able to visit with family and friends or lead a normal life has been devastating. “Before You Leave” really focuses on the idea of loss, whether of a friend or a partner, a pet or even one’s normal life. It captures that feeling of desperately wanting just one more moment before it is all gone forever.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
I just filmed the lyric video this past weekend, my first one ever. It will hopefully be up on my YouTube channel in about a week or so. I can’t wait for y’all to see it!
How was the recording and writing process?
The process was an amazing experience. As this was my first time releasing a song, it was probably the most exciting time of my life so far. The actual songwriting process was very quick because when I sat down to write I already knew exactly what I wanted to say, and the recording was quite fun. We added cello and keyboards and a second guitar to the track and I love how the instruments work with my vocals to really create and enhance the mood and feeling of the song.
How have Emmylou Harris and Joni Mitchell influenced your writing?
I think folk and country singer-songwriters are some of the most brilliant songwriters in the history of music, because of how they really can tell a story that most people can really relate to. Good songwriting is storytelling, or capturing a moment, that people everywhere can relate to. Joni and Emmylou were really at the forefront of that entire movement in the 1970’s and beyond. I also have been incredibly inspired by Joan Baez and Judy Collins, who were of course tremendously important and influential as well.
Does the new single mean we can expect more new music – how’s that coming along?
I’m currently starting to figure out plans to release my second single, which should hopefully be released to the public in late spring 2021. I plan to release a new single every two-three months until I get signed, and then it would be amazing to release an EP!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Hopefully in around two months from now my next single will get released. I’m currently deciding which song I should record next, I have quite a few that I’m really excited about recording.
What else is happening next in Stella Prince’s world?
I’m having a whole bunch of exciting industry meetings and interviews, the response to “Before You Leave” has been so thrilling and is keeping me really busy. And I’m meeting lots of amazing people in Nashville and LA that are now starting to become part of my team. Building my team has been very organic and it is coming together in such an exciting way. I’m writing a lot of new songs as well and am so excited about recording them and sharing them with everyone!
