INTERVIEW: Arcane Ghosts

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks for having us! We’ve been doing okay, as you know, we have a new single and we are super excited to be sharing some music we worked tirelessly on.

Can you tell us about your latest single “Butterfly”?

“Butterfly” was an awesome track to work on because we really went out of our comfort zone to try new things with this single. Stylistically, it marks a bit of a shift for the band. We strived to keep the track as simple and organic as possible and base the song’s main melody on one solid guitar riff instead of unnecessarily complicating things. This single will be our first release since our previous EP, so it will be exciting to see how fans react to our new sound.

What was the writing and recording process for the song?

The writing process for Butterfly was a mix of jamming out parts in an hourly studio, but also sitting in a quiet space away from instruments and really hashing out the vocal melodies and making sure they were perfect. COVID restrictions kept us away from a public studio space so that forced us to write in a new way, which ended up paying off beautifully. The recording process was done with a well-known producer/engineer in Toronto named Anton DeLost. With his acute sensibility for pop music, Anton’s production style helped give Butterfly the indie/alternative feel that it has today.

What made you want to go in a different direction with this track?

I think what made us want to go in a different direction with Butterfly was our desire to keep evolving our sound and departing from anything that either we ourselves had already done before, or anything that our peers in the Toronto Pop Punk/Alternative music scene had already done as well. These changes are more so seen in the instrumentals though. Vocally, the style in Butterfly is the same as our Human Interference EP, but the key difference in this new single is the hooks are MUCH better.

Can you talk a little about the concept/making of the music video for the track?

This video was by far our best music video to date for a few different reasons. We went with Alex McFarland of Trenches Media, who is a videographer that is willing to go the extra mile to make his clients happy. We had a few brainstorming sessions with him, where we came into it with a general idea in mind and he was able to elaborate on that and create the aesthetic seen in the video. He also put us in contact with photographer Jordy Clarke, who helped us rent a studio to film in and also took some sweet pictures of us while filming the video. Two birds with one stone I’d say.

What role does Toronto play in your music?

I think the Toronto music scene has definitely influenced us to some degree. Our previous EP Human Interference has a lot of math rock elements to it, and at the time, math rock was something that we saw a lot of when we were playing shows. We all enjoy listening to that type of music on our own time, so it makes sense that we decided to go in that direction. I’m not sure how much Toronto plays a role in our newest project, but it definitely is part of our roots.

Does the new single mean we can expect more music soon? Is there an EP or Album coming soon? Or more singles?

You can definitely expect some more new music from us this year. We have more singles which we plan to release over the course of 2021, so really this single is just the beginning! I don’t want to spoil anything, so be sure to check in with us down the road.

What else is happening next in Arcane Ghosts’ world?

We recently moved into a new jam space, so we are jamming and writing some new music again. A lot of our focus this year has been on recording and producing content for our singles, so it’s nice to be able to goof around on our instruments. We definitely have a lot more songs we want to write and release for our fans, so I think it’s safe to say that you will be hearing from us again soon.
