Hi Yana, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi VENTS, I’ve been great. Currently in Dubai and working on my next music video El Amor.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Ella”?
Ella is the first opening song from the cycle Poemas de Bar op.12. It’s a story of the woman who is drinking alone in the bar. She is full of disappointments and pain, broken by life. But all the emotions have faded.
Did any event in particular inspire you which affected your interpretation of this song?
I can’t think of particular events in my life, like in the song it’s the life itself. It’s more a mental state, tiredness, solitude. I put myself in the situation of the character in the story.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Julian was directing in the distance. We both had an idea what we wanted and how we wanted to shoot. I loved the process and the performance part of course.
The single comes off your new album Poemas de Bar – what’s the story behind the title?
“Poems from the bar” are short stories, conversations that happened in the bars where Julian used to spend time after he moved to NYC 10 years ago.
By the story, it feels the album goes for a conceptual approach – was that the intention? If so, what led you and Julian De La Chica to go in this direction?
This is the real stories that Julian put together in the cycle, stories of people he met in the bars 10 years ago. When I was recording I was trying to imagine how those people would have felt. I also heard similar stories from the people that I met around the world in the bars in the past. I was trying to deliver the story with my voice and emotions and make them my own.
How was the recording and writing process with Julian De La Chica?
We started straight after I recovered from Covid. I was still weak but couldn’t wait to start. I was very inspired by Julian’s music and the text so it was easy for me. We’ve done a few rounds of recordings and I was super excited to receive Julian’s arrangements. I was recording everything at my home studio which made it easier for me and I knew when the time was right and when I felt I was ready.
What role does Dubai play in your music?
Dubai is my home now. It has the facilities to have a certain lifestyle and time where I can focus on my international projects. Dubai is safe, it is easy to get around and I live in a house 5 min walk from the beach which is amazing.
Does your Russian heritage also influence your work as an artist?
Yes of course, my education as a singer and an actress. My life experiences, my upbringing, all makes me who I am as a person and an artist.
What aspect of love and loss did you get to explore on this record?
In Ella it is all about disappointment, frustrations, lack or love in her life in general and complete loss of hope. Story about loneliness in the big city.
