“Sail Away” is the illustrious escape from singer/songwriter Maggie Szabo. The Los Angeles-based pop electronica artist captures oceanic vibes with nocturnal, neon beats in this emotionally rich track. Think of her, she sings with sparkling, seductive voices. She’s confident. She’s genuine and she’s too clever to give us a literal sound of the islands or beach warmth. With more layers than expected, peeling away at “Sail Away” is like discovering an artist at their true core.
The song’s undercurrent is immersive and while I didn’t find myself engulfed or drowning in the murky depths, I did find the sounds to be translucent and dazzling. The imagined landscape is fluid and full of movement, a perfect jumping-off point for dancing and a fine groove. Szabo’s breezy vocals float in-and-out of the music bedrock with grace and charm. She possesses the made-for-pop music vocality and range. I think in some respects she might be containing her octave range for this song, and yet, other moments she gives just a small peak of what those notes might sound like in a different, more stripped down sound. I really like how “Sail Away” presents her as sensitive, but not so much you don’t feel empowered by her voice.
Szabo has a natural bounce, an innate positivity that runs through her voice. Maybe it’s more of a delicate balance between warmth and kindness (and that grace I was referring to earlier), but I found myself very curious and interested as the song played. She keeps you engaged. She’s a siren in her own right, but she’s not (like the backing music) overpowering. This song is very tight and molded into a perfect way. In fact, it might be understated. I loved the balance between her fresh vocals and the electronic music bed. There’s a jolt every once-and-while to match the beat, and it’s a mix between a flash and a resounding bump. I can foresee this song making not only a lot of Spotify playlists, but hitting the club scene hard. I loved the way it makes you sway, it has this warm intimacy happening. I felt connected from the first note to the last measure.
Szabo is originally from Canada, and now that Los Angeles home, Szabo’s work and footprints continue expanding. “Sail Away” is her first self-produced track and follows her single “Worth The Weight”. Szabo is a sought after vocalist, especially among DJs. Her work has been placed on networks like E!, Disney, NBC, Netflix and more. Among her accomplishments, Szabo has over 20 million Spotify streams. I’m confident that “Sail Away” will rack up many spins – this is the song that gets you ready for summer and takes you to a special moment. It’s the song for a person that wants to convey their love for another and have that person hold them in high regard. Szabo definitely earns all the regards heading her way for this impressive single. You can’t replicate what Szabo naturally has – she has that ‘it’ factor going for her in the awesome “Sailing Away”.
