Hi Casey, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks so much for having me!! I’ve been great and excited to have some new music out there to kick off the year
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Come Turn Me On”?
Last year when we were going thru lockdown I did a heap of co-writes and teamed up again with two amazing writers Sam Gray and Kaci Brown over in Nashville and as soon as we wrote this one I knew it had to be a single
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
We’d come up with this really cool vocal melody/hook for the chorus and the lyric idea just sort of stumbled out of our mouths ‘I’ve been around the world, seen lots of girls, but you stand alone so come turn me on’. The song is all about the fact that there’s nothing better than coming home to the one you love
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Think this is my favourite music video we’ve shot to date. It was just such a blast putting together and I was lucky enough to have the creative mind of my wife behind the overall concept of the clip. Lots of energy, neon lights and we found the most incredible location called the Smoked Garage to shoot it… so it all worked out perfectly!
How was the recording and writing process?
Definitely different to what I’m used to but also a sign of how (as a music industry) we’re adapting to the fact that we’re not able to travel a great deal, get into studios in Nashville to record etc like normal…. So with this one I teamed up with the guys at MSquared (Michael Paynter and Michael DeLorenzis) who have produced a lot of my stuff over the last couple of years and I recorded the vocals remotely at a studio up here on the Gold Coast run by Amy Shark’s MD Brad Hosking. Its amazing what we can do now and I guess it’s really changed the landscape of how to record during a global pandemic
What role does Australia play in your music?
A massive one. Its been great to see commercial radio especially start to embrace this new wave of modern country music thanks to fellow Aussies like Keith Urban, Morgan Evans and more recently Seaforth. Definitely proud to be an Aussie and there no better feeling than having that support here…. And touring in your own country
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
Absolutely… its important to keep an open mind and that’s one of the things I love about co-writing is everyone brings their own strengths to the songwriting process
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Ha absolutely! I’ve been lucky enough to spend a lot of time in the studio already this year so they album is coming along very nicely…. I’m already excited about getting these new songs out there!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
At this stage we’re hoping for a little later on this year… we’ll probably release 2 or 3 singles first and then drop the album. I’ll keep you posted on that album title ha 😉
What else is happening next in Casey Barnes’ world?
With the new single out, we’ve just kicked into a national tour which started in Adelaide and next stops are Melbourne and then onto my old home state of Tassie. Its just so good to be back playing live shows again… I think that’s what I missed most while we went thru lockdown in 2020 so making the most of being back out on the road again!
