INTERVIEW: A Crime Called

Hi Andrea, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello everybody. It is a strange period in the life of all people … We are standing at the starting blocks waiting for it to be possible to start playing again!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Drown”?

The whole story of “Drown” has some fascinating details, very suitable for the narration of a biographical story. At the beginning of 2017, I received a phone call from two producer friends with whom I had already collaborated. They are Eddy Cavazza and Giuseppe Bassi aka Dualized, both with international rock productions in their portfolio. What they offered me was really cool; they have a song they would like to bring to my attention. This immediately stimulated my imagination; I get into my car and traveled 200 km to reach them. What I listened to is a bomb! It is rock, it is current with past echoes, with fantastic electronics and orchestrations; the level of what I listened to is very high. Music and lyrics reach intense moments of very high quality, especially in the chorus, structured to be the main moment of the whole song. I immediately agree to work with them for the realization of what, for all of us, would be my band’s new single (A CRIME CALLED). I also discovered that the song, which took the name of “Drown,” after pre-production, was sent to New York and submitted to Dan Korneff, the great producer of Paramore, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin, etc. Dan immediately agreed to be part of the production, as long as the work is done at his studios in Long Island (New York). It is an offer that is impossible to give up and so I fly to the states for three weeks of intense work on the production of Drown. It is an unforgettable three weeks of hard work. we record 8 hours a day and, once we get to the mix, we spend as many hours in front of the mixer counter. The result is incredible! Much better than any of us could expect. The sound impact is that of the singles of the great rock bands of the moment. Mastering the song thinks Ted Jensen at Sterling Studios: now Drown is a real musical monolith

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No event in particular inspired the creation of this song. it all happened extremely naturally; the ideas flowed quickly through our minds and hands as we played the song for the first few times.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Only one thing was missing from the song to be perfect: a video that can visually support the sound impact of the song. Something that is not trivial, that is not such a cliché. The idea comes to me one night in bed, like lightning. I contact my friend, film maker Christian Lombardo, and explained my idea to him. So “Drown” is shot in my city’s former asylum. The afternoon shots give natural and at the same time spooky plays of light. The video manages to give that sense of abandonment and suffocation that the song needed on a visual level

The single comes off your new album A New Path – what’s the story behind the title?

Everything that has happened in the last year, from March 2020, has changed the plans for the realization of the album. Since I could no longer go to the United States to continue the recordings, I decided to develop some of the songs of the new album with different producer friends, located in different parts of Italy.

This is the meaning of A NEW PATH.

How was the recording and writing process?

Almost all the songs on this album were born from my mind and my imagination. in some I was helped by Biagio’s guitar riffs, in other cases I had great help from Andrea Bertolini, who took care of the electronic parts, and Christian Tambornini who took care of the orchestrations.

What was it like to work with Dan Korneff and Giuseppe Bassi? How did those relationships develop?

Working with Dan was great! He is a very helpful and very patient person, as well as a great professional. To me it seemed incredible to be able to work alongside a person who had produced records that had entered the history of rock. We spent three long weeks of intense work together and the second result. me is exceptional. I have known Giuseppe Bassi for many years. he was the producer of the first A CRIME CALLED album … I knew I could trust him

How much did they get to influence the album? interpersonal relationships are the basis of this album and its success. All the collaborations present have contributed to making the album heterogeneous, fresh, cool and powerful.

What role does Italy play in your music?

I have a special relationship with Italy, my country. I write music and sing music in English, I travel the world doing tours, but Italy is always my home, my base, my land.

What aspect of life did you get to explore on this record?

This album is about deep feelings, distances, problems related to interpersonal relationships, but also about everyday life, weekends, pop music and many other things

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I write music and lyrics at unthinkable times. I often find myself composing a song at five or six in the morning. The place is always the same; the small studio I created in my home.

What else is happening next in A Crime Called…?

We are planning some concerts to be able to promote our new album. Unfortunately, the times are still very long due to this pandemic situation. I hope this situation can be unlocked soon. we all need to go back to playing and seeing concerts without having problems and worries.
