Hi Tiggi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hiya! Thank you so much for having me! I’ve been good thank you, I’m spending a lot of time writing which I love and taking way too many selfies (and pictures of my cat, Mr Business!)
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “High Season”?
So for me, High Season is such a mash up of feelings and experiences, it’s almost hard to pin it down sometimes! It’s definitely a bit of a shout out to my mental health state, I’ve been very open about my journey with chronic depression (the highs and the lows!) and the constant pursuit of happiness and the euphoric feeling that can come with it, especially with medication. What I hope though is that someone can listen to High Season and feel something completely different to what I do when I hear it and sing it. It’s also a step towards where I’m looking to discover sonically, so watch that space!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I wouldn’t say any event in particular inspired the song on my part, though I can’t speak for my co-writers and they may have had a very specific event in mind! I can think of a few times when listening to it has brought up quite a few memories but it’s a bit more ambiguous for me.
Any plans to release any sort full length video for the track?
Actually because High Season was released just before lockdown #3 any video plans kinda kept being delayed again and again, so then I decided I would wait for my next single to unleash my crazy ideas!
How was the recording and writing process?
It was amazing! The actual writing of the song was so relaxed and I love that everyone in the room put their personal touches on the song too, honestly the talent that they have is insane! We ended up re-recording the vocals before it was released which gave me time to think a lot more about the vocals and really get it exactly as we had envisioned.
What was it like to work with Gil Lewis and Toby Scott? How did those relationships develop?
Those guys are just incredible. Both of them are totally amazing to work with, so easy- going but mega-talented, it’s basically a dream combo! I’d worked with Gil previously and he was in the original writing session and Toby came in after the song was written. They basically both put their magic on the track and made it what it is now.
How much did they get to influence the song?
I think everyone involved in the process, from writing and producing to mixing and mastering, puts their influence on a song, whether it’s quite obvious or something more subtle and that’s what I love about working and collaborating with people, it becomes so much more than what it would have been if I was writing and (trying) to produce on my own.
What role does London play in your music?
I LOVE being in London, the music scene (pre-COVID!) is/was amazing, you could see someone new every night if you wanted to, there’s such a unique mix of genres as well I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of music in London. Now we just have to wait for COVID to leave so we can all get back to it!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
It does! I’ve got a few songs lined up actually, it’s one of the few things we’ve been able to do in lockdown and I can’t tell you how excited I am for them to be released! I’ve been doing quite a lot of writing courtesy of Zoom but I will be over the moon when we can have face-to-face sessions again.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Actually yes, there is! I’ll be honest I don’t think I’ve ever been so prepared for a single release, I reckon that’s one of the lockdown silver linings to be honest. So the date is currently… the 23rd of April! BUT I think I’ll keep you guessing on the title (gotta keep a few little secrets!)
What else is happening next in Tiggi Hawke’s world?
Well, I’ve got new singles coming out this year which I cannot wait for and in the meantime I’ll be writing as much as I can, experimenting a bit genre wise and seeing what comes out of it! I think festivals are a bit up in the air at the moment but I’m crossing all my fingers that maybe we might be able to play some live shows towards the end of the summer. But in any case, I’ll be doing photoshoots with my cat, as per usual, and perfecting my selfie technique (there’s a way to go…!)
