Makichi, welcome to VENTS; can you tell us a little more about the concept behind your latest album, ‘The Rain Stopped’?
The basic concept of the album is Home and Homeland, in the higher level of its meaning.
Also our experiences of living inside and outside of our homeland, and reaching some conclusion from those experiences. And bringing those experiences of our life into sounds and words and finally music.
And also if you move the “I” in the RAIN and put it in the beginning of the word it becomes IRAN. Beside the actual meaning of “the rain stopped”
What is it about the poetry of Hafez, Rumi, Ferdowsi, Saadi and Vahshi Bafq that inspires you?
First of all they are great Persian poems by the great Iranian poets.
Beside that, we’ve always tried to capture the soul of Persian music and bring it to Electronic music. not just mixing a traditional instrument on the electronic music. So, as a composer working with such poetries as beautifully written as those, meaningful, deep with amazing form, it helps you to reach the melodies and feeling you seek. It’s like they show you the right way.
How would you describe your style?
It’s really hard to describe your own style. But maybe we can put it like this, we use electronic materials and sounds, electronic instruments and try to reach the new sound which only belongs to us.
And in the genre I think Indietronica might be the best description.
Do you have a favourite single on the album?
Actually we released “I Lust You” as the first single of the album, but we can’t say it’s our favorite. We really love the whole album, we really work hard and deeply for this album.
How does The Rain Stopped differ from your previous releases?
I think this album has a deeper connection to us, from the moment we started working on this album, and we reached the idea of the album, we felt different, it was like a “ Eureka” moment.
But everytime we start working on a new project we try our best to make it our best work.
How has relocating to Strasbourg affected you as an artist?
Beside the usual challenges that relocating has until you reach the balance with the new life, the effect was very good. After coming here, we were able to work openly and easily and freely. And we definitely have more possibilities here, since we came here we had much more success actually.
Can you tell us a little more about your writing and recording process?
Actually they are never the same. When something gives us an idea, like a line of a poem, an image, even a word, or some chords, a melody, when something hits us, anything that makes us want to write a music, we start writing. Sometimes we start with writing a melody, sometimes we have a chord progression and we start from there. As i said it’s never the same process.
Aside from music and poetry, what else inspires you to create?
As I said in the last question, anything could inspire us. An image, some news, a sentence maybe etc. Or anything meaningful we experience in our lives.
What else can we expect from Makichi in 2021?
We’re very excited about our new album. And we just start the new year with this album and this is really awesome. And we definitely continue working on new stuff. As our motto, we never stay quiet.
But we mostly hope we can perform our new album in front of a live audience. We really miss that. Sharing your music with others on a stage is the best part of being a music artist.
