Anyone who knows me knows that I let my Karate Kid/Cobra Kai freak flag wave proudly. It’s hard for me to disguise my love for the original 1984 flick and its television sequel, after all: I’m one of those long-in-the-tooth Tim Riley types who actually caught The Karate Kid during its ’84 run and, as a test to prove my love of the original conceit of that first film, endured three hit-or-miss sequels all in order (unknowingly I might add; it’s not like I’m some pop culture Nostradamus after all) to make it to the Land of Milk and Honey known as Cobra Kai, one of the best ongoing television shows going right now. All of that gratuitous backstory out of the way, it’s nice to get an update courtesy of our crane kickin’ cousins over at Variety on the upcoming fourth season of the smash Netflix hit Cobra Kai.
Actors supreme Vanessa Rubio (Master of None) and Peyton List (The Swap) have officially been promoted to the actor-coveted role of series regulars on Cobra Kai.
Rubio has knocked it out of the park since day one on Cobra Kai as Carmen Diaz, the long-suffering mother of Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso acolyte Miguel. She’s also serving double duty as Johnny’s potential love interest. Meanwhile, Peyton List has been giving William Zabka’s 1980s rep as one of the scariest high school bullies ever (right up there with Kiefer Sutherland’s mad dog bully from hell Ace Merrill in Stand By Me) some serious contention as a very scary disciple of Sensei John Kreese.
Alongside that bit of news comes some skinny on the casting-end of things for season 4 of Cobra Kai: Actors Dallas Dupree Young (Where’s Waldo) and Oona O’Brien (Sky High) have signed up to the show. Young will play a new high school kid who suffers from bullying and turns to karate as a solution to his problems, while O’Brien essays a character named Devon who is nonstop competitive, a fast study and pretty quick tempered when pushed too far.
WHEW! There you have it Cobra Kai aficionados! All of the news that’s fit to print on the upcoming fourth season of our favorite show!
