Cour T. is DIRTYBIRD’s very own wunderkind, having joined the label as a resident at just 17 years old. Upon listening to cuts like “Black Magic,” “Dope Farm,” and his most recent release, ‘Monalisa,’ it’s easy to see why—the Curitiba native’s clearly got a keen ear for sound design.
The aforementioned ‘Monalisa’ sees him taking his usual off-kilter sonics a step deeper, yet he still manages to pack in plenty of a punch. The clangy title track “Monalisa” opens the EP with mystical melodies and thumping bass, leading into an extraterrestrial climax that begs for a dance. Closing things out on an equally powerful note is “Louvre Love,” a funky piece based around lighthearted vocal samples and heavy grooves.
Curious to hear more about the creative process behind this mysterious young artist and his relationship with DIRTYBIRD, we sat him down for an interview ahead of release.
Hi Cour T., welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello all VENTS Team and readers, it is an honor to be sharing this with you! I’m doing fine, thanks for the invitation
Can you talk to us more about your latest EP ‘Monalisa?’ What was the production process like?
Monalisa EP was created gradually during the quarantine months. It was from the second track that I created the name of the EP. The track “Monalisa” was saved but without a name at the time, until after the creation of the second track “Louvre Love.” Then, album began taking shape and making connections. The Louvre museum is where the painting Monalisa is located, so I brought this exchange of ideas to the title of the tracks
Did anything particular inspire you to write this EP? What is the connection you have with Paris?
The third track “Notre Dame” came after I watched a documentary about the Notre Dame Cathedral; that inspired me a lot and was essential for the finalization of the EP. In essence, I wanted to show the importance of art in our lives by paying homage to Paris and its installations. The city is one of the greatest cradles of art in general.
How does “Monalisa” the song embody the painting Monalisa?
The music with its strange and even subliminal synths along with the melancholy melody alludes to the traces of the painting—a work somewhat mysterious in my opinion. Who never felt noticed by the look of Lisa del Giocondo?
What role does Brazil play in your music?
Brazil is my homeland, the source of my greatest inspirations. I love my culture. My musical references are mostly Brazilian, from Rap to Samba. We have a lot of good things to enjoy and a lot to learn with the country’s culture.
Which Brazilian artists do you look up to most and why?
I can name a few names like: Bruno Furlan, DJ Glen, Holt 88, DJ Marky, Rolldabeetz, DJ Zegon and many others. They are people who brought a different sound, each with its own unique characteristics that in my opinion, broke great aesthetic barriers of music.
This is your fifth EP with DIRTYBIRD. How has your sound evolved since you joined the label with “Black Magic?”
I think that music is a portrait of the human, one of the forms of self expression. Over time people change and mature, and that’s what I think about my art too, I feel that my sound is more mature since my first EP at DIRTYBIRD but still has my core essence.
And how has your time with DIRTYBIRD impacted your career overall?
The DIRTYBIRD without a doubt was the turning point of my career. Since my first release there many things have changed. Big doors have opened and are opening for me. I am very grateful to Claude Vonstroke and the entire record label team. Honored to be part of the family. In the last few months I have been presenting ”THE BRASIL SHOW’ ‘in the label’s Twitch, another achievement that I am proud of and it has been a very good experience during the quarantine.
Give us your top three tips on staying sane during lockdown.
Everything is a matter of time…many hours in front of the computer frying your head can be even more harmful in times of lockdown. Rest, try to get distracted by other things, watch a movie or a series—something that inspires you. Monalisa EP deals with that a little too, how important art is in this period we are in, it is the escape route for the mind. The moment we are in is very complicated, for producers there is always that doubt that what I am producing is really good? And without public feedback it gets even more difficult. So the tip is to know how to pace yourself, keep your balance and enjoy what is good for you!
When touring comes back, where would you like to play most?
I really want to play Dirtybird Campout again and at record label parties. I dream of traveling a lot within my country as well, getting to know new places and different audiences. And I can’t wait for it to come back.
What’s one secret/fact we haven’t heard about you yet?
A recent curiosity: I almost had to abandon my career due to Brazil’s mandatory military service (every young man must participate in the selection when they turn 18), where I almost had to serve. Now I see this as something funny but it was a very tense period for me LOL
What else is happening next in Cour T’s world?
I ventured into the world of acting [laughs]! The “Monalisa” track contains a video clip where I acted and it was a very cool experience. This year we will have many releases…I ask you to follow my social networks to stay on top of everything.
