INTERVIEW: MJ Songstress

Genre-bending singer-songwriter MJ Songstress recently released the music video for her new single “Carousel”The first thing you’re likely to notice is the intoxicating beat, an unmistakable sonic signature with a mid-range thump, “Carousel” is a sensual, immersive and propulsive bop, designed to pick you up and whirl you around into carefree, spiritual existentialism.  It’s a song that’s guaranteed to fill the dance floor, and one that will surely put you in the mood for new love.

• Hi MJ, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

~  I’ve been well. Thank you. Taking life one day and moment at a time.

• Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Carousel”?

~ Carousel is a fun up-tempo beat and record that I am so happy to have created with my producer and partner in crime Tyrice “TyJamz” Jones. We had a blast creating this record and that to me is what music is about. Having fun and doing what you love.

• Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

~ No nothing in particular. I was just hanging with Tyrice listening to some Sergio Mendes and the idea for the song was born. We normally just get into a vibe and inspiration hits when it does.

• How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

~ Shooting a music video for Carousel was a blast. I just put together a team of people and asked if they were all willing to jump in. They were all down and did it for the love. So I am so grateful to have a group of people and creatives that I can count on to support me. We basically just shot the music video in my apartment and boom Carousel was created.

• How was the recording and writing process?

~ The recording and writing process was easy breezy. Me and Tyrice were in a vibe and once we locked into a zone the lyrics and melody just flowed.

• What role does NEW YORK play in your music?

Being born and having access to New York has been such an inspiration for me. To have access to music studios and underground music spots and dance studios has really added colors and elements to my creative process. New York is flooded with so many different cultures, genres and aesthetics. So that has truly inspired me to dive into different avenues when it comes to creating music and expressing myself. The music connections are endless.

• You’ve gotten the chance to find success on shows like The Voice and having worked with a few big names – what have you learned from these experiences?

~ What I’ve learned from experiences such as The VOICE are that first and foremost it is a TV show. People have no control on what goes on. Having said that, that experience taught me to keep going no matter what. Believe in yourself, your power and your gifts. You are the creator of your life and destiny.

Usher had shared with me, “When one door closes another will open. Luck Favors The Prepared!”

That will always stick with me.

• Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

~ I am a person that gravitates to great energy and great vibe. As long as that’s present I’m good to go. However, musical connections can not be forced. You either have a vibe with someone or you don’t. It hits me immediately the moment I meet someone.

• Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

~ Absolutely. Stay tuned.

• Any tentative release date or title in mind?

~ Still finalizing some creative aspects on the new project so definitely stay tuned. I cannot wait to release this next batch of music.

• What else is happening next in MJ Songstress’ world?

~ Music is my number one, my every day, my life. Along with that I am all about keeping myself mentally, physically, spiritually and energetically prepared. Personal and professional development are a must and also protecting my temple and my health. The world of MJ is always about continuing to grow, stay healthy and be the best version of myself that I can be.
