The Best Bladder Protection for Women

Causes of Incontinence In Women

Urinary incontinence in women seems to often begin around menopause, with increasing incidence of stress incontinence: dribbling of urine that is unexpected with coughing or slight straining, like picking up fairly lightweight things.

If your incontinence has progressed beyond what can be considered “stress incontinence”, such as “overflow incontinence”, there is leakage that occurs pretty much all the time if there is any urine in your bladder (essentially the only time you leak is immediately after emptying the bladder).

There are other kinds of leaking, such as urge incontinence, which is that extreme feeling of urgency that seems to come out of nowhere, causing you to drop everything and panic, racing as fast as you can go for a toilet – and still leaking urine, no matter how fast you make it there. Lastly, there is incontinence that comes with mobility issues. This means that lack of speed or ability to walk leaves you with incontinence issues.

Specific medical causes of incontinence include:

  • Weak bladder muscles
  • Overactive bladder muscles
  • Weakened  pelvic floor muscles post-childbirth, post-accident, or post-surgery
  • Damage to the spinal nerves that control urination, or the ability to notice a full bladder, caused by such diseases as MS, diabetes, and Parkinson’s
  • Degenerative issues, such as arthritis, ALS, or MS, may make it difficult or impossible to get to the bathroom in time
  • Pelvic organ prolapse, which is a relatively common weakening of the muscles that help the voluntary control of urine flow, usually from childbirth or some other injury to the pelvic floor muscles, which can cause the bladder, rectum, or uterus to slide out their normal placement and into the vaginal canal. In many cases of this, the vagina then actually turns inside out, like a sock that is pulled the wrong way out and protrudes from the body. When this happens, the urethra might be completely unable to empty the contents of the bladder, causing pain and extreme urgency, More to the point, this condition can cause the loss of continence, and even after the organs are either manually or surgically put back into place, various degrees of incontinence may occur afterward – often permanently.

There are other, more uncommon reasons that incontinence might arise. In many cases, pelvic floor exercises might be helpful in making this kind of incontinence better, and might even bring back full continence, in some cases.
