INTERVIEW: Jack Rasmussen

Hi Jack, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS. Not bad thanks, hope you are well. Little bored now of the lockdown but guess everyone is in the same boat. Keeping busy with the music at the minute though.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Broken Youth”?

In summary really its quite a nostalgic track that explains both the agony and ecstasy of growing up whilst painting a picture on the modern day world.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Watching The Social Dilemma helped and inspired me to finish it. I wanted the lyrics to be relatable and comparable from what it was like for most current adults now in their youth playing outside 24/7 as to what it would be like growing up now with the addiction & attention of social media etc.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

The music video was released on Monday the 22nd of February at 7pm. Peter Storrie did an unbelievable job with this.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was one of them songs I couldn’t finish for a long time, sometimes you get them songs where it takes a while to find the words needed to express what you want to say. I had the first verse and chorus from like a year ago and then it was one I revisited back in the first lockdown in summer 2020 and finally finished.

It was recorded in Newcastle at Blank Studio with John Martindale. Liam Cooke & Josh West both featured on the record.

What role does Durham play in your music?

I’m from a small town in Co. Durham called Newton Aycliffe. It’s quite a close-knit community in some respect, everyone knows everyone. It’s definitely taught me to be resilient.

How has Sam Fender and The Smiths influenced your writing?

Fender’s just an unbelievable song-writer and he seems to be getting better, every song has so much purpose and meaning. It’s great that someone doing so well is from the North East too. It’s definitely influenced my songs lyrically; I always try to re-create more of a meaningful story now when writing.

I’ll always be a fan of jangly guitar music which kind of characterized bands such as The Smiths. Not just The Smiths but bands from that era have definitely influenced the instrumentation in my tracks.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’ve got another track mixed & mastered which I’m really excited about called ‘In A Different Light’ which was recorded as full band. I think it’s my strongest song to be honest, but I’m really not sure when I’ll release that one yet. It might not be next.

What else is happening next in Jack Rasmussen’s world?

I’ve got a live session coming out of a cover of one of my favorites on Monday the 1st of March. I’m sure you’ll know it. Apart from that I guess just keep writing, I’m back in the studio in March also to get another tune down too.
