Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi, thanks for having us. We have been great. Really gearing up for the Release of our New EP “Your Weapons, Your Words” on May 14th and our latest single “Alone” which is coming out on March 5th.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Alone”?
So “Alone” is about a manipulative relationship. The story is based around the belief that you can’t be without a specific person, regardless of the fact you know you aren’t happy, and nothing quite feels right. You are made to feel that a lot of what happens is your fault and it fills you with a lot of self-doubt, however you still cling on and feel there is no alternative.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
We have all been in that one relationship that just wasn’t healthy. Whether it was one sided, hurtful or it had just ran its course, but you still feel the need to work at it and see if you can make it work. Sometimes the thought of being Alone is just too much to take and a broken relationship seems to be the safer option.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes, we have a Lyric video that will be released on the same day (March 5th). If you check out our socials we will have teasers coming shortly which will give you a sneak peak of both the song and video.
The single comes off your new EP Your Weapons, Your Words – what’s the story behind the title?
We touch on topics such as depression, anxiety, addiction and relationships on this EP. The title comes from the realization that if you just take the first step and talk about your issues, it will become your strongest weapon to get past your fear and help you to start to heal.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was so much fun. We record with local producer JSR Audio, and any time we step into the studio with him, we honestly don’t know what is going to happen. Tracks change, he brings brilliant ideas on how to make your music stand out and creates fantastic mixes. Writing is also a great process. We freely bounce ideas about and just play until something works.
What role does Belfast play in your music?
Belfast for being such a small city, has a larger-than-life music scene. If it wasn’t for that I don’t think we would be a band. We all met each other through local gigs and playing in different bands over the years. There are some truly amazing musicians in Belfast.
What were some of the emotions you get to explore on this record?
We really dig deep into our pasts in this EP. The past year has been so uncertain, we found that having the band was a great way to blow off steam. It allowed us to meet and use any negativity that we had in our lives to be creative. We are not afraid to express our emotions or talk about serious issues if anything this EP allowed us all to open up about our demons and get past them.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Every week we all would meet up for a coffee, we joked and called it our support group because all we ever talked about was depression, anxiety and mental health. But those meetings really played a huge part in writing lyrics, structuring the music and planning ahead for recording and promotion as well.
What else is happening next in FOREIGNWOLF’s world?
Right now we are really focused on promoting the release of “Your Weapons, Your Words”, and our new single “Alone”, but we are always writing and recording. We had a toured planned for May this year but that has had to be postponed until further notice. Once the world gets back too normal, we will be on the road and hopefully will be able to expand our audience by getting on board a few festivals as well. Exciting times ahead.
