INTERVIEW: Mick Dimitri

1) Hi Mick, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me. I’m doing great.

2) Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Oh My Friend”?

It’s the story of two friends who sail into the night trying to escape a storm. Once waves start breaking onto their boat they realize the futility of their attempt, but it’s too late. Or is it?

3) Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, and in fact, it might as well be the most personal song I did so far. I wrote it for a friend of mine after he was diagnosed with cancer. I think music helped both of us navigate that time.

4) Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Covid didn’t give us many options, so instead of a traditional music video, we released a BTS about the making of “Oh My Friend”, which you can find on my YouTube channel.

5) How was the recording and writing process?

I started working on it at Sticky Studios (many moons ago), but only managed to finish it during the first lockdown. It was very frustrating because I tend to be quite impatient, although dealing with all these hiccups was very instructive as it forced me to let go of control.

6) What role does Italy play in your music?

Growing up in Rome certainly shaped my sense of aesthetics, but I don’t think it’s reflected in my sound. It’s more about the underlying philosophy, and I know this will sound awfully pretentious, but Rome really makes you wonder what it means to create something that can last forever.

7) How have Shawn Mendes and Lewis Capaldi influenced your writing?

To be honest, I wouldn’t say they influenced my writing at all. Some people say we sound somewhat alike, but the themes we deal with are very different. I would argue that my music is more disenchanted.

8) Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Indeed. Next month I’ll be putting out my debut EP “Take My Hand”, but there’s already some new stuff I’m working on at the moment.

9) Any tentative release date or title in mind?

April will also be an interesting month, but that’s all I’m going to say.

10) What else is happening next in Mick Dimitri’s world?

I guess I’m trying to hold on, like everyone else. It’s hard to feel good about the future right now, but I’m very keen to keep making music and have faith that our industry will eventually recover. If not, I’ll probably just open up a Bagel shop or a dog grooming salon and do that for the rest of my life.
