INTERVIEW: Mathieu Boogaerts

Pic by Noemie Reijnen

Hi Mathieu, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Not that bad thank you, in France we say « l’espoir fait vivre », it means that the fact of knowing that it will be better after makes life easier

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Annie”?

It is the opening song of the album. Like all the songs I write, I never look for a song, or decide to write a song. First I play guitar, improvise, have fun, then something happens (sometimes), somethings that moves me, a melody… then very naturally, some words come out of my mouth. Those ones were in english, that is the only thing that I have decided. And it was « Annie, is like no other, And will be, Forever ». So it inspired me to write a song about an eternal fantasy, a desire that would never end.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

All the songs I write come for sure from things, feelings I have experienced, but without knowing exactly which one, and when, where…

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I liked the idea of a sequence of shots of different « normal » places, around my own house in south London, in which I suddenly appear, out of my hiding place. Also, I really don’t like « boring » videos, So mine had to be very based on rhythm, to fit with the music. So the shooting was very (very) precise.

The single comes off your new album Boogaerts (en anglais) – what’s the story behind the title?

I moved to London 4 years ago from Paris, just to live an exotic adventure. But as soon as I arrived I felt a strong frustration not to be able to be understood by the people. I mean if I write songs (for 25 years now) it is to express my deep feelings to the world. And in such a foreign one, I felt like a complete alien. I HAD to solve this, that is why I have choosen to write my french songs… in english.

How was the recording and writing process?

Recording, as usual, was a « artisan » way of working, in my own place, with the great multi instrumentist musician, Vincent Mougel.

What lead you to release your first English album now?

As I said, the desire to build a bridge between me and… you !

Was the approach and writing process any differently?

The approach is the same, because, even though it is in english, it had to be something very intimate, to fit with my feelings. So I did not allowed myself to look for words that I would not know in the dictionary for example. And it had also (like in french) to sound good in my mouth, with no accent. So there were many words that I couldn’t choose, because they did not. It was tough, but fun too!

What role does France play in your music?

I have no idea. But the fact of spending 4 years in the UK, with you guys, made me realized how french I am.

What aspect of our particular time did you get to explore on this record?

I can’t answer this question, because I did not plan any song to say a particular thing. They come as they come…

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Absolutly everywhere and anytime. It is a everyday inspiration. What I see, hear, smell, taste, touch… then a song comes out of me.

What else is happening next in Mathieu Boogaerts’ world?

It is always a real joy to release a record. Knowing that at least the song are available, everywhere, by anybody. So for the moment I am just enjoying this particular moment.

But I hope (I can’t be sure of that) that the desire of writing new ones will come back soon, and that I will also, as I did on that record, direct my own music videos.

MERCI
