INTERVIEW: The Gypsy Queens

Hello Gypsy Queens! How are you doing? Please tell us a little about yourselves:

Hello ! we are well, thanks for the interview. We are … well, we are the most famous band you have never heard of !

Your new single ‘I’m Into Something Good’ is with Peter Noone, the original singer of Herman’s Hermit who released their version back in 1965! How did this collaboration come about?

We have a common friend that knew we covered the song, and knew that our albums are about covering some legendary songs, and artists, and he suggested putting us in touch, to do a cover of “I am into something good” with Peter Noone, as we did for our first Album, covering “Marrakech Express” with Graham Nash, or “Ventura Highway” with America.

You’re known for your covers of famous songs, how do you pick which tracks to cover? And do you have a favourite to perform?

We always try to stay away from what is obvious, we like to find songs that are in everyone’s musical DNA, but that you wouldn’t think of, if asked. Exactly as we do for private parties (what we are known for) we try to pick songs that ” you didn’t know you wanted to hear”. I am sure individually, each one of us has his own favourite but its always about our public, so its more aimed at what the public wants to hear.

Have you ever been tempted to record some original music of your own?

We prefer doing covers, so if people don’t like them, we can blame half of it on some one else !

It’s been a long time since your last album release, why such a long gap? and will you be releasing another album soon?

Since our main activity is performing at private parties (we only played a few festivals including Glastonbury and Harrrogate) and we don’t sell tickets to promote an album with a tour, it is always quite a heavy expense to have a full album (or even singles) produced properly. We like doing things the old fashion way, of getting into a proper studio and having the band (and some help sometimes) play the songs for real…I call them “expensive but necessary business cards”. Especially since our concept has been copied over and over, of the “acoustic moving around private party band” we use these albums and singles to keep being “original doing covers”!

Ideally this is going to turn into an album, but could be an EP. We will have to play it by ear, especially since due to Covid, our business came to a halt.

You are known for your amazing live shows and for playing lots of exclusive parties and private events. Any standout shows you can tell us about?

There is 2 that stand out; one was playing at Harrogate Festival Spiegletent in 2018, because it is one of the rare occasions where people actually pay individually to come and see us perform, and we always feel every single person is as important as any private client hiring us, so it is always a challenge. We don’t operate with a song list, and we have to guess as we perform.

The other one that I can think of; and I hate to name drop but this was a very good evening; is a few years back, Elton and David had asked us to perform for David Walliams birthday as a surprise. Every one loved it, I remember Elton saying “They are on fire”.

With COVID-19 the live sector is pretty much stopped, as a live band how has this affected you and what do you think the future holds?

Unfortunately, we have been affected a great deal. We went from 200 Shows per year to nearly 0. We respect all the guidelines, and are waiting with patience. The future for us will be quite tricky, as it probably won’t be back to normal in one day (at least not for us) and it is going to be difficult to have a year with 30 % of performances, then 50% then back to 100%. It is difficult because it becomes financially challenging to start from 0 again.

You started out busking on the streets of Nice, any tips for any new musicians just starting out?

Today the scenario has completely changed. Back when we started our “Facebook and Instagram” were the streets.

Today you can have the same exposure (or more) on social media. The best tip I could give, is be yourself and DO YOUR HOMEWORK ! (talking out of me not always doing it…) The only way to develop an audience is to be good, ready and prepared. Luck is when opportunity meets preparation. give yourself the chance to be lucky.

What else is happening in the Gypsy Queen’s world?

We recently did a collaboration with Paul Anka, we will tell you more about it as soon as we can !

Finally if we should listen to one song of yours, which one should we listen to and why?

Well we would say the new single, “I’m Into Something Good”, as we could all do with something good for 2021, no ?
