What Are the Best Films Set in The Middle East? Why?

The central geographical position of MENA, its deep-rooted historical and cultural connections, and the large number of expats living and working in the area all help to understand why watching TV drama is so rich and diverse in the Middle East. Since about 2005, the Turkish series (dizi) has been extremely successful in the country, generating huge revenue for Turkish producers and distributors.

In the last two years, due to a revival in local production and due to Turkey’s political support for Qatar, this situation has changed somewhat, leading to the Saudi-backed MBC pulling Turkish material off-air. However, local research indicates that MENA viewers still enjoy dizis and watch them via online platforms such as Starz Play and Turkish channels.

Some of The Best Films Sets of All Times in Middle East

The Little Drummer Girl (1984)

The Black September Campaign, terrorist training camps in Libya and Syria, and the civil war in Lebanon unfolded almost 20 years before Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and 9/11. The film, based on John Le Carre’s novel, portrayed those times so well.

Lebanon (2009)

A gritty video, shot almost entirely inside the walls of a tank, shows the experiences of a team of raw Israeli military recruits and their role in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon.

The Green Zone (2010)

The Green Zone (2010) was a successful attempt to explain the aftermath of Bush’s egg in the face of the moment when no WMDs were discovered in Iraq and the pressure to find something by the US military. Sadly, after that, the movie also degenerated into a typical Hollywood tat.

A Separation (2011)

The subject matter seemed so banal, but you will become deeply immersed watching this human drama unfold after a minute into the movie. A fascinating snapshot of everyday life in Iran.

Fill the Void (2012)

This tender and emotional film, set in the ultra-Othodox Jewish community in Tel Aviv, is like a Jane Austen story shot in The Godfather’s style, with religious considerations influencing the heart of a young woman who may or may not be in love with her late sister’s husband.

Best Film Production Company in The Middle East Region

Local content is particularly common at Ramadan, leading to major investments originating from existing and emerging platforms. A deep desire for the latest content is also demonstrated by viewers. For the launch of Ramadan, MBC produced the historical drama series Omar. During Ramadan, movie channels struggle as viewers switch to TV dramas.
