Say this about the house that Uncle Walt and Mickey Mouse fashioned with their imaginations, the Disney Empire is not one to rest on its laurels. If they did, we’d be staring down umpteen sequels to Steamboat Willie and they’d still be basking in the successful July 1955 opening of Disneyland. Instead, via the expedient and diligent journalistic acrobatics of our Big City brethren at Variety, we’ve learned today that Disney’s new streaming service – Disney+ – is launching oodles of new projects for their uber-popular platform.
These projects forthcoming from Disney+ includes a full dance card of ten European projects sanctioned specifically for view on the streaming platform alongside the soon-to-be general entertainment brand that goes by the moniker of “Star.”
Some of this cinematic magic is coming from the following:
France – A four-part Star mini-series called Oussekine which chronicles the real-life events that spiraled out of control and led to the demise of a student.
Germany – Dark comedy entitled Sultan City which chronicles the unlikely job pivot from respectable matriarch of a German-Turkish family to hardcore criminal kingpin.
The Netherlands – Sports doc Feyenoord Rotterdam.
In addition to this highlight list of new projects, Disney also announced that they had created two new positions in Germany and Spain: Sofia Fabregas is now the Vice President of Original Productions. Benjamina Mirnik-Voges has been appointed as VP for original productions in Germany.
The Man with the Plan, Diego Londono of media and networks content for The Walt Disney Company EMEA, issued a statement elaborating on the new projects and offering some mouse-sized clues as to what else they have up their proverbial Fantasia sorcerer’s hat: “Our commissioning strategy showcases our commitment to producing world-class original content, tailored to local markets but with the creative ambition to appeal to audiences across the globe. Europe has a global reputation as a creative powerhouse, which combined with Disney’s expertise in high-quality storytelling and its relationships with top talent on and off screen will ensure Disney Plus is the go-to destination for compelling and engaging entertainment in Europe.”
Londo’s more to the point colleague Liam Keelan, the Vice-Prez of original content for Disney EMEA said of this announcement that “These first ten projects embody our ambitious vision for local production. Our initial European offering underscores Disney’s regional commitment to outstanding and diverse talent, reflecting our desire to work with the very best storytellers in the industry.”
Star will launch on Disney+ February 23; be there or be square, Mouseketeers!
