With the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, many changes were taking place globally, and most people, companies, and businesses were trying to keep up. Since there wasn’t enough information about the virus, there was constant research going on, and people were learning about it as new information came along. The Government was learning about the virus and making changes to protect its people from catching the virus, which was the only thing they could do. They implemented mask mandates forcing people to wear masks at all times, especially when in public places to prevent the virus of spreading or catching it from others. They also implemented the right amount of social distancing, which meant that people had to keep a specific amount of space from one another. They implemented rules across the board, which meant that people had to be particularly careful when they were in large crowds or queues. The social distancing rules translated to shutting restaurants, that for most of the pandemic, they could not open. However, after spending enough time in the pandemic, they could throw open their doors but with restrictions and as long as they were following rules. There was more leeway for restaurants and diners running open-air establishments since that made more sense overall, and there was enough open air to keep people safe.
How were companies dealing with the virus?
When it came to the changes taking place in terms of companies and businesses, they could not keep up since the authorities were implementing massive lockdowns every time there was a spike in the number of cases. Although the restriction was a good one and was protecting people by reducing the spread, the Government would open everything as soon as the numbers went down. It was still quite challenging for companies to compete with the changes that were taking place. For most of the pandemic, people were not allowed to meet at the office, which was another challenging aspect with most now working from home. With changes here to stay, it seemed like most businesses and employers would have to adapt to the new system of remote working.
Most companies mentioned that they had to get through tedious processes, and remote working was not the answer since it significantly decreased productivity. According to a study concerning the people working from home, most of them stated that they were finding it challenging to work from home. There were many distractions, constant changes, errands and other people getting in the way of the work they were handling. They were just about meeting most of their deadlines which was quite challenging. On the flip side, many people were losing their jobs since companies could not hold on to everyone while getting through the pandemic. While some of them made changes to the number of people they were working with, others had to shut down entire divisions to keep them safe.
What were people doing with their time at home?
Many people who were out of work in many parts of the world, including the United States and United Kingdom, were not planning on getting back into the workforce just yet. Most people did not want to get a job and lose it shortly after, and that was their biggest fear through the pandemic. Most of them were waiting for the economy to stabilise before they would get back to work which would make the process a lot easier, by then.
In the meantime, people were spending their time working on picking up new skills. They were putting time into the hobbies and chores they did not get a chance to handle since they were too busy with their day jobs, in the past. Many were actively attending classes and courses where they were learning how to cook, bake and even paint, which were things they enjoyed in the past.
There were a lot of downsides to spending so much time at home as well. People were not getting enough exercise, and with unhealthy eating habits, since they were at home and could eat whatever they wanted all the time, they were packing on the pounds. Getting to the gym was challenging because of the pandemic, however, there were a few that were open following the restrictions. Remote exercising and working out was a new thing since people were now working out from their living rooms. They would have a trainer who would provide the exercise routines remotely, and they would work out with him.
When it came to getting jobs to work under an employer, the process was a little different. With such a large number of people spending so much of their time indoors, even unemployed, companies wanted to make sure they were picking and working with the right people. Getting a background check was becoming more common now than ever before, and applicants had to make sure they did not have a criminal record when lining up for a job. Some jobs meant that they would be interacting with particular age groups of people and they had to make sure that there were no qualms with that since there were some people who were not allowed in these situations because of things that they might have done in the past.
Additionally, the job they were getting in touch for would provide information about the checks they had to handle since various jobs needed different degrees of tests. Some of the background checks were coordinated through the police department, which meant working through a tedious process. There were multiple third party options, websites and platforms, who would provide applicants with the information in two days to a week so they could provide it, if needed, to their employer.
