INTERVIEW: Burgeoning Producer Zight

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fly Away”?

“Fly Away” is a song for all dreamers in the world. As musicians, we all know how hard it is to pursue our dreams, how many obstacles we got through, how many things we gave up to become who we are. I wrote this song to motivate all dreamers, persist and don’t give up on the path to achievement.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Actually, the chorus of “Fly Away” is a piece of melody that stayed in my hard drive for 11 years. Since I was a kid. I hear melodies popping out from my head occasionally. Most are dull, few are worth recording.

I can’t remember exactly how I recorded “Ya gonna be okay, you gotta fly gotta fly away” in my mp3 player. Guess it was the dream of the kid, who just wanted to fly away.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Enjoy the music video of “Fly Away”. :]

The message that I want to send out is, pursuing a dream is extremely difficult, extremely uneasy and extremely frustrating. But at the very last moment, you will eventually make it, if you don’t give up.

How was the recording and writing process?

I started working on Fly Away in July last year. Started with chorus, extracting melodies of same chord and similar pace in a giant folder that I stored my “came-from-nowhere” melodies in the last 15 years. Lyrics, and then production. I took quite some references from Zedd’s Clarity, which was one of the greatest hit of big room EDM. I changed the drop once if you read my Facebook production process.

What was it like to work with Sonna Rele and how did that relationship develop?

I finished “Fly Away” in October, and then I tried to contact many singers on Instagram, Youtube, through email. One day Sonna Rele replied me. I remember her voice in “Strong”, theme song of Disney movie “Cinderella”, so sweet yet so much strength. At that moment I knew she is the singer I’ve been looking for.

How much did she get to influence the song?

It was a truly joyful, professional experience working with Sonna. We both aim to bring this song to mainstream, music chart level. We had a lot of discussions before recording sessions. The vibe, the mood, harmonies, everything. I remember it was one or two days after Thanksgiving, I received a few raw vocals from Sonna, which were the best gift I’ve ever received in Thanksgiving day.

How would you say your Synesthesia influences your approach to music as a whole?

Like I said I hear melodies from nowhere. Anyway, for the one that I feel good, I record them with my mp3 player, and then my iphone. Like a folder, with thousands of melodies. Last year I started to rate these melodies, like from A grade to E grade, into different folders, different genres. I constantly hear good melodies now for sure, but not as good as what I heard when I was a kid gotta admit.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

“Keep Running”, a song for all runners, collaborating with cover singer Peter Forest. I have strong faith that the pandemic is going to end very soon. I do hope “Keep Running” will bring some positive and energetic vibe to the post-pandemic new bright world.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Let us hope this bad pandemic over very soon, and that will the very good time for “Keep Running” release.

In the end, I genuinely believe that we will start running very soon, without masks. That day we will “see everything under the sun”, a lyrics from “Keep Running”.

What else is happening next in Zight’s world?

Making more music. 100% focus. :]
