Sometimes it’s the really good and consummate actors that go overlooked and unacknowledged for years. You know the sorts of actors I’m talking about: Solid journeymen who consistently put forth their best effort in every blessed project they take on. At times it is these reliable character actors that are the best thing of any project; they’re just that good in their ability to raise the stock of a motion picture or a television project by their sheer presence in it. Such is the case with Delroy Lindo whom I’ve been a tremendous admirer of ever since walking into a Syracuse, NY movie theater and catching his scene-stealing work in Spike Lee’s Malcom X. Like such contemporaries as Brendan Gleeson, John C. Reilly and Don Cheadle, Lindo’s craft of acting – heck, his very presence – is a thing of beauty. And now, finally, this actor par excellence is being recognized courtesy of a long overdue Career Achievement Award, according to our muchachos at The Hollywood Reporter.
Lindo – an actor in such films as The Cider House Rules, Get Shorty, Da 5 Bloods and Crooklyn – was singled out and honored for his achievements in film during the Critic’s Choice Association’s Celebration of Black Cinema event.
Accepting the award from his fellow Da 5 Bloods actor Jonathan Majors, Lindo said that “Broadly speaking, the contributions of African-descendant people to world history have historically not been included so I accept this award in the spirit of inclusion and the fact that we are in a time, I hope, in which the importance of the contributions of black people, African descendant people, the importance of those stories will come much more to the forefront and be included in the context of world history.”
For my money, Lindo has long been a marquee magnet: If I even catch wind that Lindo is in a film then I know that at least his particular acting parts will be worth the price of admission alone. And his voice; such a commanding, eloquent cadence that permeates class and wisdom not heard outside of Orson Welles or James Earl Jones. From all of us at Vents, kudos and congrats for this long overdue recognition, Mr. Lindo.
