INTERVIEW: Jack Newsome

  • Hi Jack, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m great! Thanks for having me. All things considered, I’m healthy and working so I couldn’t really ask for more.

  • Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Year The World Stood Still”?

This song means the world to me. It was my way of dealing with the year 2020, and sharing the song was so therapeutic. I’m still so excited that so many people resonate with it.

  • Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I remember thinking the pandemic (among other things) felt like a biblical moment, like the Genesis flood or something. It all felt so heavy and there was no escape. My roommate Connor was camping in our backyard just to feel something, so I called him inside to help me write the song.

  • Was this a song you spend most of the year that passed trying to write or it just happened one day?

It fell out very quickly. The song was written in 3 hours tops. All the material was right there, I didn’t have to make anything up.

  • Any plans to release any sort of music video for the track?

The live session is out now and there is a video on the way!

  • How was the recording and writing process?

After writing a bunch of pretend love songs with pretend plots, writing this song felt like taking a good long shower. Connor played the most gorgeous guitar on the track, and I produced the demo. I took the demo to my producer Cambo who put the perfect finishing touches on it.

  • Coming from such a big gig such as Songland – how did that experience influence you as an artist?

Songland influenced me as an artist by showing me how big things could be. There was nothing standing between me and the artists on the panel besides a couple years of hard work and a couple hits. I had my work cut out for me.

  • Has it placed any pressure on you as you work on new material?

Not pressure, just inspiration. The show really highlighted the magic of collaboration which is de-pressurizing in nature. It lit the most amazing fire in me.

  • What role does Studio City play in your music?

Living in LA has it’s pros and cons, just like everything. But the creatives here hold themselves to such a high bar. I’m fortunate to be learning from the best every time I go to a session. Melody is king here, and you’d be hard pressed to find pop talent like this anywhere else in the world.

  • Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We really didn’t expect the reaction that TYTWSS has had, so right now we are enjoying seeing fans react. More is coming though.

  • Any tentative release date or title in mind?

New music is on the way… and it’s dance-y. I’ll leave it at that.

  • What else is happening next in Jack Newsome’s world?

I’m building a mini dance studio in my garage right now and it’s given me a lot to look forward to. Even if it’s just a space to move around, I’m so excited to finish it.
