Hi Cha:dy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been good thank you! We’re going through this 3rd lockdown and it’s tough, but I’ve managed to find a good routine and keep on busy this time around.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lazy“?
Lazy is one of the most honest and raw songs I’ve ever written, it’s describing how I was navigating through depression, for me it looked like: isolating myself, cancelling plans, not replying to my friends, sleeping more to escape, feeling worthless, using TV as a distraction, and I mention all that in the song.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, it was a time I was starting to identify what it was I going through, because I didn’t know it was depression, I just thought ‘I feel miserable but it’s just a phase’.
I was explaining to someone that I didn’t know what I was wrong, I just wasn’t feeling okay and had no strength to do anything and to that they answered: ‘stop being lazy’ at the time I felt very misunderstood, but I ended up writing a song about it.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
I really wanted to tell the story though visuals as well, wanted to be honest with that too, nothing glamourous. It was a chill and fun video to make, it was just me and my director Spacey Blak, we crashed my friend’s place and made a huge mess and started filming.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote this song very quickly; it was a night I was very inspired to write something but could not come up with anything and found this old guitar loop my amazing producer Desmond had sent me a while back and wrote the song in 20mn.
I went to Sweden to record the vocals with him and then another very talented producer Max took over the song and finished the track from France, so it was a very international project haha.
What role does Paris play in your music?
It is a place I love with all my heart and that’s where I go to relax and spend time with family and friends but it does not play a role in my music much actually, it is where I grew up and I have lots of memories there but I tend to write more about my life now here in London. I might though dive back into it one day and write about my life in Paris.
How has Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse influenced your writing?
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the first albums I’ve ever bought with my pocket money, and I was 6 years old, so I grew up with Lauryn Hill: her voice, her melodies, her raps … I discovered Amy a little later, but I fell in love with the poetry in her songwriting, and the honesty of her songs. They’re both strong female artists that did not compromise their vision or their music and still made it into mainstream pop culture, I admire in both the incredible artists and unapologetic women they are/were.
With your music getting so much momentum – do you feel any pressure while putting this album together or rather the opposite?
Yes I feel everything haha: the stress, the pressure, the anxiety… it’s a lot but I’ve learned to deal with it. I haven’t released such a big project since 2018 so even though I’m nervous to know what people will think, I’m also excited and I’m looking forward to sharing my music with everyone.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes actually a full 5 track EP project is on its way – it’s still in progress, the difficult situation we’re in at the moment makes the process a little slower but it’s still going.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
It will be called Manifesto Of Honesty and should be out in June 2021!
What else is happening next in CHA:DY’s world?
Right now not much because of this weird situation we live in but I try to treat myself right, checking with myself and make sure I’m okay physically and mentally. Lots of face time with friends, exercising and Netflix, thank God for Netflix.
