Actor Brie Larson Takes a Bite from Apple (TV+) with a Starring Role in New Drama Series

For any shortsighted fans who fretted that the Oscar Brie Larson picked up for her tour de force performance in the riveting film Room was a fluke or that Captain Marvel was a mere paycheck movie that would only lead to a bevy of other such popcorn fare, you’ve been put on notice: Larson is one of the best actors of her generation, and apparently streaming behemoth Apple feels the same way, according to our pals at The Hollywood Reporter.

A straight to series order was given by Apple+ for upcoming drama Lessons in Chemistry which is set to feature popular thespian Brie Larson not only as an actor, but also as a producer. This marks the second series for the new streamer the busy Larson has added to her gargantuan workload; the first series was announced back in 2019 as being a CIA drama. That series was also a straight to series order, proving that Apple and Brie Larson are quite simpatico indeed.

Lessons in Chemistry is set in the 1960s and features Larson as someone who has dreams of going the scientist route, only to be rebuked by a landscape that is still very much male dominated. Finding herself pregnant and jobless after getting the ax from the lab she toils away in, Larson’s character lands a job hosting a television cooking show which she uses to not only dispense chicken noodle soup recipes but also for bromides that catch the attention of housewives throughout America. The series is based off of an upcoming novel by author Bonnie Garmus.

Executive producing Lessons in Chemistry will be Larson and Susannah Grant alongside Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of production house Aggregate Films. Apple holds a producing credit, natch, for the show and it’s worth noting that the streaming platform obtained the show only after a very competitive bidding war. The moral of the story? Apple really wants to be in the Brie Larson business. And who can blame them?
