Why Kids Hate Homework
Many children start learning at the kindergarten or nursery school level, and the first step of school has undergone immense changes in the last decade. They were mostly places to play and socialize, but nowadays, there is a strict rule for learning to read and write. Some kindergartens provide homework to young children, which reduces the available playtime.
How to motivate your kids
We have to change our mindset first if motivation is what we want. Going to college, getting a job, or having a stable income should not be the sole reason for attending school. That drives the aspect of enjoying learning away as it is a mindset fixed on working. It would help if you thought of going to school as an avenue of learning, growing, exploring new subjects, and acquiring knowledge.
If your child does not like going to school, you can have an early intervention so that they get to have a good start. Here are the steps to making that happen.
- Do not refer to the homework as the child’s job.
When you mention the word job, the child automatically insinuates that it is all work without fun. The child will feel bad even if the subject is not that bad.
- Avoid telling your child that they can’t play before finishing the homework.
When you separate the homework from play, you are merely implying that the assignment cannot be enjoyable. In the development of a child, a game is essential. Make that count. You can instead tell your child that they can do both, but make it physical. They can decide to do both in order of their own as long as they both get done.
- Avoid using the term ‘no homework’ as a reward.
Some teachers tend to give students no homework as a reward. That is horrifying. Homework mirrors what has gotten taught in school and helps students understand better. I should not get used as a vessel for punishment or torture. In case you give your child an impression that homework I something to run away from, they will do just that.
- Avoid forcing, nagging, or bribing.
Do not force or nag your child to do their homework. Could you not make them do homework? If you push or bribe them, the motivation of the child will drastically drop. The child must learn to cultivate their motivation inwardly when it comes to doing homework.
- Allow your child to face the consequences.
If your child refuses to do homework, let them, but only after explaining to them the importance of the task and what may beget them if they refuse to follow the instructions. Tell them how they will not retain the information better than their counterparts and what the teacher will do if they fail to hand in their work, like getting detention or losing leisure time. Before doing that, check with the school and ensure there is no corporal punishment.
