Speaking of two teams, Monterosso put two teams together for the Queen’s Cup, as we said before – Monterosso and Monterosso Vikings, the latter featuring Alessandro Bazzoni’s wife, Siri, who played with Sebastián Merlos, James Beim and Juan Martín Zubía. Siri had already made her debut in British high goal, during the Prince of Wales Trophy, with a lineup that included Sebastián, Francisco Elizalde and George Meyrick.
There’s no doubt that Dominican Republic means a lot for Monterosso and Alessandro Bazzoni. Not only he met Cubi there, but also he met Norway-born Siri, and married her some years later. Siri faced her husband on that Subsidiary final of the Queen’s Cup, and her team produced very impressive performances in the ladies tournaments. Says Alessandro Bazzoni to Prensa Polo: “She won all the tournaments she played; and that makes me very happy, because Monterosso is an organization that has a strong commitment with ladies polo. We are very involved with the women who play polo. Currently, Siri is working to get a raise for ladies tournaments, from 18 to 22”.
How was play that final against your wife?
Oh, it was very nice, a lot of fun. The organization grew a lot, and it is great to share this passion and do what I love most with my wife. We do everything together and we enjoy polo and horses together. It took four years of hard work, the right time to put the structure and logistics together, in order to have something very competitive with Monterosso in England, which was always our main goal. Slowly, but we made it. And I like to do things well, slowly, but well.
The Queen’s Cup has been played behind closed doors this year, so Her Majesty the Queen was not able to present the trophies. When this pandemic is gone, do you see yourself receiving the cup from Queen Elizabeth II?
(Laughs) Of course!. The Gold Cup is indeed a fantastic tournament, really great, but the Queen’s Cup is unique. And the Queen is a very nice person, a remarkable woman who knows a lot about horses.
What can you tell us about Monterosso’s plans for next year in England?
Well, the big news is that we have signed a long-term contract with Pelon Stirling, who will be playing with us in 2021. Cubi will be there of course; I have a great esteem for him, I trust him a lot, he has been with Monterosso since day one, and he is an extremely professional player. That’s why he has a very important place within the organization. We aim to complete the team with a 4-goaler. We have many names from different countries in mind, but we have to wait and see. We will also have the second team, Monterosso Vikings, with Siri, Sebastián and two other players yet to be confirmed.
