I can wax rhapsodic with the best of them when it comes to actors that tickle my fancy: Running the gamut from Montgomery Clift to Kane Hodder and everything in between, I wave my “I Love Actors” flag proudly. One of those thespians that I’ve been a fan of since 1985’s Explorers is Ethan Hawke, a consummate and steadfast journeyman of an actor if ever there was one. The man has charisma to spare and his nuanced and multilayered work in films like Dead Poets Society, Linklater’s Before trilogy, and in Sidney Lumet’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead are a crash course in what it means to be a good career actor with chops to spare. Another thing that makes Hawke endlessly fascinating to go on this journey called life with? His commitment as an actor to try every sort of role imaginable; The Purge, Gattaca and Sinister are proof of a talent determined to not get caught up as any particular label that the Hollywood overlords and the public in general love to apply to any actors attempting to ply their craft; which is why this weekend’s announcement from the Hollywood Reporter that Hawke would be essaying a role literally right out of a comic book did not surprise me in the very least.
Vents has already reported on the upcoming Disney+/Marvel ongoing series Moon Knight. What we didn’t know at the time though that playing the bad opposite of actor Oscar Isaac’s titular hero of Moon Knight will be the above canonized Hawke, who will reportedly be essaying the role of the chief Big Bad. Just who is that? Marvel ain’t spilling the beans, Dear Readers, but online speculation has it that it may just be Moon Knight’s arch foe from the comics, a ne’er-do-well by the memorable moniker of Bushman. That name might not be as recognizable to the more casual comic book fan as the Red Skull or the Joker, but Bushman gave ol’ Moon Knight plenty of grief in the comics, beginning his life as a onetime friend and fellow mercenary to the hero before money muddied the waters between them.
No drop date for Moon Knight as of yet, but the directing team for the series has been announced in the form of Mohamed Diab (Clash), Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, Synchronic).
So was an ongoing superhero television show what I had forecast for Ethan Hawke in my dusty Magic 8 Ball? Nope, not really, and that’s probably yet another reason why this pop culture pundit thinks
Hawke is one of the most exciting actors of his generation: You just never know what the hell he’s going to do next. A true chameleon is Mr. Hawke (said in my best-worst Frank Oz/Yoda voice), and we’ll look forward to seeing him weave his peculiar form of magic when Moon Knight does finally premiere.
