Are you tired of the shows you have lined up in your Netflix queue? Are you looking for an optimistic show to distract you from all the bad news on your TV and in your social media feeds? If so, try DC’s new series Stargirl, the first live-action show centered around one of DC Comics’ best characters.
Who Is Stargirl?
Stargirl, which is executive produced by Geoff Johns, focuses on a young heroine just figuring out her powers. Unlike many other origin stories, Courtney Whitmore doesn’t know about her future or potential when the show opens. Instead, she’s a typical high schooler who just made it through a rough day at her new school. Her dad walked out on her family 10 years ago, and now she, her mom, and her stepfamily have moved to a new town, Blue Valley. It takes an accidental act of revenge to alert Courtney to the fact that her stepfather is hiding something that’s bigger than she could ever have predicted.
What’s the Backstory?
The pilot’s opening sequence delivers all the backstory you need, even if you haven’t followed any of DC’s earlier comics or movies. The Justice Society of America’s base is invaded by the Injustice Society of America 10 years before Courtney’s main story starts. The attack is fatal, killing almost every JSA member, including Starman, a talented hero who wields the Cosmic Staff. Luckily, his sidekick Stripesy survives, and Starman has time to give his friend the Cosmic Staff and charge him with identifying the next leader of the JSA before passing away. Stripesy takes the staff and hides it in his basement, reverting to his alterego, Pat Dugan, before falling in love with and marrying Courtney’s mom. The past doesn’t stay hidden, though, and when Courtney discovers the Cosmic Staff, she and Pat find a new connection: their identities as superheroes.
