2021 is the year when cricket comes back to life. As we all know, cricket wasn’t played for more than half of 2020 due to the covid-19 situation. However, this year we will hopefully see some jam-packed crowds in the stadiums, especially when the World T20 kicks-off. The year is dedicated to T20, as the T20 World Cup will take place in October, but, before that, we have a lot of league action as well. One of the T20 leagues that are becoming more and more popular and high-quality with every passing season, is none other than the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The sixth edition of the prestigious T20 league will be beginning in Feb and will continue up till the next month of March. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the PSL 2021 teams and schedule recently. The drafts of the Super League have also ended, with every team picking the best players for themselves.
Another great news regarding the upcoming PSL 6 is that it will be completely played in Pakistan. Just like the Indian Premier League is played entirely in India, and the Big Bash League in Australia, and so on. Having said that, it’s time for the Pakistani fans to enjoy the matches of their foreign T20 league at home. The matches will be played in Karachi and Lahore only since the PCB has taken the covid-19 circumstances under notice. Initially, five venues were planned. The venues were Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and also, Peshawar.
Karachi Kings to Face Quetta Gladiators in the League’s opener
Without a doubt, the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League is going to be better than ever. With all the matches scheduled in Pakistan, and all the international cricketers agreeing to visit the country, it’s only going to add to the charm of PSL.
If we specifically talk about the first match of the Pakistan Super League 2021, then it’s between none other than the defending champions, Karachi Kings, and the 2019 PSL winners, Quetta Gladiators. Karachi Kings became the champions for the first time in the last edition, after comprehensively defeating Lahore Qalandars in the final by five wickets.
The first match of the league will take place on the 20th of February, 2021. National Stadium in Karachi will host the match. So, the Karachi Kings are going to enjoy the home advantage. The match will begin at 7 PM local time, 2 PM GMT, and 9 AM EST.
34 Matches to be Played throughout PSL 6
Similar to the prior season 5, season 6 of the PSL is going to feature 34 matches as well. To begin with, there will be 30 group matches, with every team playing the other one twice. Afterward, we will head on to the elimination format.
First of all, the top two group teams will battle it out in the Qualifier. The winner of the match will book their place in the final. However, the losing team will still have a chance to make it to the finals. After the qualifier, there will be Eliminator 1, between the 3rd and 4th placed teams. The winner will advance to Eliminator 2, to go up against the loser of the Qualifier.
Lastly, the winner of the second Eliminator and the winner of the initial Qualifier will battle it out to become the champions of PSL 6, in the final on March 22nd. The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will host all the knockout matches. The timings will be the same, as the qualifier, eliminator, and the final, all will begin at 7 PM PST.
