Adaptation Series of Marvel Comics “Moon Knight” Snags Indie Sensations Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead to Direct

Is there anything quite as all-American as the four colored medium known as the comic book? Next to baseball, jazz and rock and roll, there are few things that are as inherently tied to this country as the garbed heroes that patrol the nighttime skies and fight for Truth and Justice and the American way.

Rocketing out of the comic book world into the land of cinema and television is the upcoming Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus series Moon Knight, which is based off of the cult favorite hero from those friendly web-slinging Marvelites. Our All-Star Squadron reading pals over at Variety tipped us – and everyone else, for that matter – about the addition of two well-known and respected horror directors who, tonally, are pitch perfect for a Marvel character who straddles the worlds of superheroes and the supernatural.

Moon Knight was created by writer and artist team Doug Moenech and Don Perlin back in 1975. The character in the comics began life as a mercenary with a dissociative identity disorder named Marc Spector who was betrayed by his employer and, as he lays dying, makes a deal for a second chance at life in exchange for becoming something of an avatar on Earth. Said avatar takes the shape of one of the coolest adorned heroes of the 1970s that proceeds to fight all levels of crime, primarily supernatural in nature.

Directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson have been officially confirmed as having signed up to direct upcoming episodes of Moon Knight. Moorhead and Benson are a directing team par excellence, having cut their respective teeth with the 2013 indie horror sensation Resolution. Their latest film Synchronic opened in limited release in October of 2020. The duo will be joining the new Marvel endeavor alongside director Mohamed Diab (Clash) and Jeremy Slater of Umbrella Academy fame.

Although not officially confirmed by Marvel, it is believed that no less of a thespian than Oscar Isaac is set to put on the white cloak of Moon Knight. This would cap off an incredibly busy time for the in-demand actor: Isaac has eight – count them, Ladies and Gentleman, eight – film projects in the hopper for 2021.

Moon Knight is tentatively set to begin production in Hungary this March with a 2022 premiere date being eyed for Disney Plus.
