Those two adorable scamps Elsie Fisher and Alan S. Kim – the Mickey Rooney and Shirley Temple of their time – known for such critically and commercially lauded films as Minari and Eighth Grade are now joining forces for a brand new film called Latchkey Kids, per those scoopin’ fools over at Variety.
Latchkey Kids is about a brainy nine year old (played by Kim) who strikes up a friendship with an oddball teen (Fisher) who is undergoing a turbulent home life and looking for some form of an escape. Caveat time: This ad hoc Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid face major hurdles with their newfound relationship when local law enforcement begins to suspect that cute little Alan S. Kim might be involved in the deaths of his past babysitters. Ooh, dark in a very Harold and Maude sort of way, methinks.
Both Fisher and Kim have received major plaudits for past work: The former was a Golden Globe nominee back in 2018 for Eighth Grade, while the latter broke the proverbial internet with his star turn in director Lee Isaac Chung’s epic film Minari. Coincidentally – or not – both films were released from production house A24.
Taking the directing chair for Latchkey Kids is none other than John J. Budion who made a splash in the world of visual effects (a highlight was his stellar work in 2019’s Midsommar) before moving into directing with 2017’s powerful film Rockaway. Latchkey Kids will mark his sophomore directing effort. Doing the writing chores for this new film is Meaghan Cleary who comes to the world of screenwriting after an extensive and celebrated career as an art director, actor, costume and wardrobe department and – WHEW! – a production designer. Ken H. Keller and Caron Rudner of production house Related Pictures Group will do the producing honors, while executive producer tee-shirts and complimentary coffee mugs will be distributed to Brendan Thomas and Cory Thompson of Tact Media fame, along with RPG’s David Polemini and Donald Malter.
Alan S. Kim – who is making the awards circuit for Minari – recently commented on Latchkey Kids, proudly telling our cohorts at Variety that the film would be his second film. In further news, yes, you are a complete piker when compared to this very busy kid…
Production of Latchkey Kids is expected to commence in June of this year.
