Ranking Every Episode Of Season 21 Of ‘The Simpsons’

This is it. My final ranking of a episodes from a season of The Simpsons. I’ve been doing this for months now, and I have really enjoyed it. However, I am ending with season 21. Why end on a seemingly random season? Well, to be honest, I would have done it with season 20, but that season totally sucked. My least-favorite episode ever aired in season 20, so I didn’t want to end on such a low note. Now, I don’t know if season 21 will be any good. I could still be ending on a down note. At the very least, it should be better than season 20. Fingers crossed. So how do the episodes of the 21st season of The Simpsons stack up? Let’s find out!

23. “Pranks and Greens”

22. “O Brother, Where Bart Thou?”

21. “The Greatest Story Ever D’ohed”

20. “Stealing First Base”

19. “The Color Yellow”

18. “Moe Letter Blues”

17. “American History X-Cellent”

16. “Bart Gets a ‘Z’”

15. “The Devil Wears Nada”

14. “Thursdays with Abie”

13. “Million Dollar Maybe”

12. “Treehouse of Horror XX”

11. “Homer the Whopper”

10. “Postcards from the Wedge”

9. “To Surveil with Love”

8. “The Great Wife Hope”

7. “Judge Me Tender”

6. “The Bob Next Door”

5. “Boy Meets Curl”

4. “Rednecks and Broomsticks”

3. “Once Upon a Time in Springfield”

2. “Chief of Hearts”

1. “The Squirt and the Whale”

Well, at the very least season 21 is better than season 20. Is it good? No, it’s thoroughly mediocre. Still, mediocre is a big step up from bad. The bottom three here are three really bad episodes, among my least favorites. “The Greatest Story Ever D’ohed” has Albert Brook in it and it still sucks! On the flip side, the top three or four episodes are really good. The top two are among my favorite episodes in the last 15 seasons or so. That’s the hope shining through in a middling season of television.

What’s interesting to me after revisiting these last couple of seasons is that the show has been decidedly better than this the last few years. Now, usually at the end of a season of The Simpsons now I say to myself, “That was decent,” but doing decent seasons of TV after 25-plus years is wild. Looking back at how bad the show was a decade ago makes it feel even more impressive. I intend to keep watching The Simpsons for as long as it is on television, and if every now and again an episode as good as “The Squirt and the Whale” and “Chief of Hearts” pops up that’s worthwhile.
