The Best Foundation for Every Skin Tone
Finding the right foundation that suits our skin tone is an undeniable fundamental step in achieving that overall natural, flawless look. Most often than not, finding the perfect match for our skin tone can be very tricky.
The myriad of brands, shades, and formulations in the market may be overwhelming, but the more options there are, the better chance there is of getting the perfect foundation to match our skin. All we need is some guidance on how to do so. Here is a quick guide to finding the best foundation for every skin tone:
Study Your Skin Tone
In general, skin tones vary from light or fair to deep or dark. In a medium shade, you can further classify the tone into beige, tan, or honey. Take note, you cannot base your foundation shade solely on your skin tone because it naturally changes throughout the seasons.
By simply narrowing down to the basic shade, the next tip is to know the color underneath, called “undertone.”
Know Your Undertone
The secret to a flawless finish is to ace the base! Figure out your undertone, which is the underlying hue of your skin, and the rest of the journey will be easy. Keeping in mind that every skin tone, from deep to fair, has a corresponding undertone, you can predict how the foundation shade will blend on your skin.
By doing the wrist test (checking the color of the veins on your wrist), you can define your undertone. If the veins are more blue or purple, then your skin belongs to cool undertones. If they turn out to be green or yellow, then you have a warm undertone. If it’s a mix of green, blue, and yellow, then your undertone is neutral.
Unlike the skin tone, the undertone remains constant no matter the season, hence, basing the foundation shade on your undertone will give you that overall natural look.
Know Your Skin Type
Even if you find the closest shade for your skin color, you won’t be able to achieve that flawless, amazing finish if you don’t understand your skin type.
Figure out if your skin is oily, dry, or both so you can choose the formulation that will best suit you. For example, you are naturally oily, you’ll probably need an oil-free, lightweight formulation and a go-to pressed powder with a matte finish. On the other hand, dry skin would need some hydration boost, like creamy foundations with moisturizing agents.
Also, choose a foundation that has full coverage, which means, it can easily cover blemishes, fine lines, large pores, and redness effortlessly. The foundation should also blend well with the shade on your neck. A good tip is to test the foundation on the chest, instead of the forearm, to actually see how it evenly matches the skin color on your neck area.
Two Tones are Better than One
Nowadays, foundation brands provide tons of shades to choose from. Make-up experts advise having at least two foundation shades on our makeup kit, a lighter and a darker tone. The lighter shade highlights the triangular zone of the face, while the darker shade contours the bony structures for emphasis. With this trick, you’ll have more dimension instead of a flat and boring makeup look.
With these tips in mind, you won’t get intimidated by the vast options of foundations offered by different brands and stores. You’ll have better judgment in choosing the best foundation fit for your skin color. Your makeup sessions will never be the same again!
