Travelling far and discovering new cultures and eating new food is incredible – there’s no denying. Because it’s so much fun to do this, we often forget about all the beauty there’s in our own backyard, so to speak. There must be some must-sees in your own country you’ve never seen before, simply because you never took the time for it or because you deemed them too touristy. Well, now is the time! Most tourists stay at home, so you can discover your own country – we recommend a small road trip. In this article, we talk about some things you have to know!
Stay safe, go by car
We don’t particularly recommend using a lot of public transport currently, so doing a little trip by car is ideal. If you don’t own a car, you can simply rent one! There are tons of car rental services that usually rent out a cars so you can go skiing (Dutch: auto huren wintersport) for instance, that now have vans and trucks at the ready – often for reduced prices! You can for instance rent a 9-person van (Dutch: 9 persoons bus huren) and fill the van with your suitcases or put a mattress in the back. Are you ready for an adventure? Oh, don’t worry if you don’t have a credit card – there are tons of rental services where you can rent a car without a credit card (Dutch: auto huren zonder creditcard).
Look for cheap hotel stays
Because the tourists are gone, many hotels have empty rooms. Rooms that usually would be quite pricey, are all of a sudden a steal. Did you always want to stay at that fancy hotel in your area? Now’s the time! Take a look at price comparison websites and check out all the prices. Maybe you can even rent a room with a small pool – there are some absolute steals to be done!
Go full-on touristy
Let’s be real, sometimes it’s fun to act like a tourist. Google the best views and attractions in your area and check which ones you’ve never seen or done before. It’s very possible that there are some lovely things to do in your country, you’ve just never done them because there are always so many tourists around. But think about how lovely it can be to watch art in an almost-empty museum! Or how you can do a guided tour of a neighbouring city and actually hear the guide! There’s so much you can do; we hope you enjoy it.
