“Game of Thrones” Prequel on the Way with Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke and Matt Smith Set to Star

No one likes to say goodbye to a good thing. This is as true in 2020 as it ever has been: How else do you explain the bevy of prequels such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Exorcist, Twin Peaks, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid which are all prime examples of popular films that have utilized the prequel treatment? Prequels have littered our collective pop culture landscape for decades and, simply put, saying goodbye is rarely ever easy (excluding the year 2020 from the list, natch), so why do it if you don’t have to? Especially when there’s still mucho money to be made?

Such is the case with the nigh universally adored Game of Thrones series which officially ended its popular HBO television series run in 2019. Everyone welcomed what felt like the natural end-game for the show, even as we mourned the loss of new stories to come out of author George R.R. Martin’s fictional universe. The conundrum of preserving the dignity and respect that the original ending for Game of Thrones endeared to television watching audiences while still scratching the itch for new stories has apparently been solved courtesy of the aforementioned prequel phenomenon. Per our sword and sorcery buddies over at the magical Hollywood Reporter, a new prequel for the vaunted series is barreling towards us with all of the urgency of a runaway, fire-breathing dragon.

Titled House of the Dragon, the prequel has officially signed actors Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz), Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and Matt Smith (The Crown) to join the ranks of the anticipated new series. Directing and co-executive producing this new sweeping epic will be Greg Yaitanes (Banshee). Also signing on for helming duties are stalwart directors Geeta V. Patel (Dead to Me) and Clare Kilner (the upcoming new iteration of The Mosquito Coast).

This prequel series is set three hundred years prior to the Game of Thrones series and is based off of Martin’s novel Fire & Blood. House of the Dragon has been simmering since 2019 when it received a straight to series ten episode pickup. Creating this prequel for television alongside George R.R. Martin is Ryan Condal who is on the proverbial pop culture bubble with this and his writing gig on the upcoming Logan’s Run remake.

No release date has of yet been announced, but Vents will keep you posted on any and all new developments for House of the Dragon!
