Weekend Movie Recommendations: Fun Superhero Movies Edition

This week’s movie recommendations come from personal experience. The other day, I tried to watch the Harley Quinn movie. Have I enjoyed the DC films of recent vintage? Not often, but I figured I’d go for it anyway. It was bad. I didn’t last more than 20 minutes. Just an unpleasant experience. I was bummed, and started to flip around HBO Max to find something to watch. Eventually, I got to Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, an animated movie from 2016. I had seen it before, but I put it on anyway. My intent was only to watch most of it, because it was getting late. I ended up watching it all, and thoroughly enjoying it once again.

If you aren’t familiar, Return of the Caped  Crusaders is an homage to Batman ’66, my favorite version of Batman. In fact, Batman and Robin are voiced by Adam West and Burt Ward. Yes, this was one of West’s last roles before he passed. Julie Newmar also returns as Catwoman. The movie has bright colors, not too much violence, and sign gags and labels galore. It’s really good, and something that makes a nice start to an evening of watching movies. Let’s call this week’s recommendations a trio of fun superhero films.

Weirdly, I wouldn’t necessarily put Shazam! on here, because it’s not as comedic as the trailers made it seem. It’s a good movie, but not quite what I’m looking for. The Lego Batman Movie, on the other hands is a perfect pairing with Return of the Caped Crusaders. I am on the record for enjoying that Lego-style animation, and this movie is my favorite Lego thing outside of the Simpsons episode “Brick Like Me.”

Thor: Ragnarok, a lo loco por el universo - Blogs Expansión.com

We move to Disney+, and Marvel, for my third movie. Now, I normally try and stick to one streaming service, but The Mandalorian is dropping new episodes right now so I know you have Disney+. Why not mix and match? It’s a tossup to me between Thor: Ragnarok and Ant-Man and the Wasp. They are both really good, but which one has more “fun” to it. In the end, I have to go with Thor: Ragnarok. It has Jeff Goldblum in it, after all. Plus, Chris Hemsworth gets to goof around and completely change the trajectory of Thor as a character. This is a fine ending to the evening. Of course, there’s also Batman vs. Two-Face, the sequel to Caped Crusaders. It’s the last thing West made (it came out after his death) and it features William Shatner as Two-Face. Call this a four-movie recommendation day.
