Hi, Jordan here fielding questions for the band. It’s been a surreal year for all of us, but we’re happy to be able to release some music in the midst of everything.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Sweat”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
“Sweat” came together on a hot day in my little above-garage apartment with no AC just up the hill from Hollywood Blvd, so the initial lyric was pretty literal. I had a demo of a synth and drum idea, but when I opened up the session there was some kind of bit-depth glitch that pitched it down, making a pulse that felt super grimy and sweaty. So I just followed that energy and had the main ideas down within an hour or two.
Ann’s vocals and Kevin’s live drums were recorded at separate times and locations, and they both brought great energy and ideas that totally make the tune.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
For the video, the dancers, Malikah and Lily, interpreted what they heard in their own style and both delivered killer performances. Then overlay texture was something we did ourselves with water, food coloring, and a piece of glass borrowed from a picture frame. Like a lot of the process for the EP, it was an initial idea, gathering elements, seeing what you actually have, and then trying to follow that where it wanted to go.
The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why did you guys named the record after the band?
I think because the creation of the band and the songs was one process, it never felt right to try to add another theme or idea on top of that. Like for this release a separate title would have felt forced or something.
How was the recording and writing process?
We did all of the writing and recording while basically everyone in the US was actually staying home, baking bread and sanitizing groceries, so that shaped the process. In one sense, it opened up the range of possible collaborators, and it was really positive to stay connected to some good friends and musicians. The shared experience of this moment of unprecedented stillness and hyper-locality was another factor, and they both had an impact on the way the songs ended up sounding.
What role does LA play in your music?
You always absorb ideas, moods, inspiration or whatever from your surroundings, whether it’s fully conscious or not, and that comes through in the way Spacette EP sounds. LA is also the imagined setting for the songs in a way — a ‘based on true events’ kind of story in “City Of Gold,” a Bladerunner-esque version of the city in “Nexus,” an all night warehouse club in “Sweat,” maybe a day trip to Death Valley or the High Desert for “Among The Spirits.” But hopefully the music feels at home wherever people hear it.
What is it about the 80s that you find so fascinating? What aspect of sci-fi did you get to explore on this record?
The 70s and 80s fascination with technology and an idealized, super glossy, neon fantasy of ‘the future’ that dominated a lot of pop culture at the time inspired some of the sounds and themes in the music. People were so interested in imagining a drastically different future, and that had a huge impact on music and movies that created some amazing aesthetic choices.
What else is happening next in Spacette’ world?
The music on Spacette EP was definitely written and arranged with an eye toward the stage, so hopefully we’ll be in a better place for live music sometime soon. Can’t wait to do that. And new music in the works as well.
