Chris Pratt is one actor with undeniable range: Whether traipsing through the snowbound Colorado mountain tops in Everwood or fighting intergalactic threats in Guardians of the Galaxy, this forty one year old master thespian boldly goes where few others would and he does so with a panache and an endless supply of modesty and humor, something that he plans on utilizing in spades for the upcoming independent comedy film The Black Belt.
Courtesy of our kooky cousins over at The Hollywood Reporter (who else?) comes the news today that the Jurassic World star will not only saddle up for acting in the upcoming film The Black Belt, but will also serve as a producer on the new indie film which was written on spec by Randall Green (The Perfect Date).
The Black Belt is being hyped up as a comedic coming-of-age story centering on a lonely, wallflower of a teenage boy who is on a quest to learn and master karate. The boy’s uncle, played by Pratt, is the free-spirit who helps him to achieve his goals. Think of it as The Karate Kid reimagined as an indie comedy.
This is not Pratt’s first brush with the ancient art of karate: The actor famously and uproariously performed some distinct karate moves during his Park and Recreation tenure.
The Black Belt comes to us through Monarch Media and is being produced by Pratt via his production house Indivisible Productions. Indivisible was founded by Pratt in order to tell stories across the wide array of platforms such as digital, television and film. Partnering up with the accomplished thespian will be producing partner Jon Schumacher. Monarch Media is also jumping into the ever-popular producing waters for the project too, via its principals Alan Powell and Steve Barnett. Not to be left out of nabbing the coveted executive producing title is Monarch’s very own Vicky Patel.
This new endeavor will be overseen through UTA Independent Film Group which will handle the ever-important distribution and film sales.
At press time, Pratt was the only actor officially confirmed for The Black Belt. This latest announcement follows what has been a very busy time for the actor who is currently filming The Tomorrow War and is also featured in the anticipated movie sequel Jurassic World: Dominion. Also on this workaholic newlywed’s plate is the upcoming Saigon Bodyguards and the television series The Terminal List.
