Academy Awards Changes and Best Picture Front-Runners

The Oscars or Academy Awards – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a few changes in recent years.

First let’s look at whats happened and after, let’s have a look at sportsbookreview and how the line makers are updating the current candidates for the Best Picture considering some recent changes around the Academy Awards. Let’s look more into it.

Most Recent Significant Change

The biggest change in recent history is all about inclusion.

For years, people across America and even around the world have been tweeting and hashtagging on other social channels, #OscarsSoWhite.

So, the Academy came up with four new criteria in 2019-2020 to assist the inclusion of diversity both in front and behind the camera. The idea is to not only enable movies with the presence of women, people of color, LGBTQ, and people with cognitive and physical disabilities, but also advocate for accurate representations.

  1. Standard A: On-screen Representation, themes, and narratives. (actor representation threshold)
  2. Standard B: Film’s creative leadership and project team
  3. Standard C: Industry access and Opportunities (training opportunities and internships)
  4. Standard D: Audience development (marketing teams, publishing, and distribution groups)

Now, a movie doesn’t have to meet all of these new standards, they just need to meet any two. I think that’s more than fair. You could more simply breakdown the standards as such: Onscreen, the crew, the studio, opportunities.

Standard A:

A leading role or significant supporting character needs to be of an ‘under-represented’ racial or ethnic group to qualify. The other option is at least 30% of the secondary roles being occupied by two or more groups.

Standard B:

Two leadership roles or department heads need to be from an under-represented group, plus at least six crew members. Additionally, 30 percent of the crew can be of under-represented groups if the first condition is not met.

Similar conditions must be met to qualify as meeting the standards of C or D.

OK. Good stuff; everyone’s included!

2008

You may have noticed there are a lot more nominations for Best Picture than there used to be. Before, there were only four. Now there are twice as many. This is thanks to perhaps the best picture of the decade getting completely slighted –not even a nomination– because it was a blockbuster and based on a comic series. For the Boujie elitists that are the Academy, it can’t be the best picture of the year if it’s Batman – we’re speaking of Dark Knight. Doesn’t matter how good the script his, how amazing the acting is, and how well it’s filmed. The Academy is simply too uppity for that.

Thankfully, this also led to a massive public outcry. Now the academy includes more blockbusters instead of just stuffy, artsy-fartsy films that most average movie-goers never saw – at least until they saw the nominations and then decided that it must be good so they seek it out.

2021 Favorites for Nomination

In 2021 … which awards for films made in 2020, we have 10 frontrunners for nomination and odds on which will win.

Nomadland is +215. This makes the Frances McDermot led film about fringe society during the recent depression the clear leader on Vegas odds boards.

Next is Mank at +500.I have to say, this one should be actually nominated and has a real shot at winning the Oscar. After all, it’s about the famous director scrambling to finish Citizen Kane, which did not earn the Oscar for best picture, losing out to How Green Was My Valley – not nearly as good of a film.

Next is The Trial of the Chicago 7 at +600. This is another of the initial 10 on the boards that I believe will be in the final running for the Best Picture Oscar. This film should resonate deeply with many right now. It’s all about challenging social norms accepted and enforced by the government, then getting punished for it … it’s eerily similar to our current situation.

After that is News of the World at +800. It has Tom Hanks, so enough said.

The rest of the movies are longer shots, and one that I don’t even think will end up officially nominated is Soul. It’s a comedy and an animated film. So, not cool enough in the eyes of those Bouji film academics.
