BETSIE GØLD delivers the sweeping new single ‘Birthday Sadness’

Following on from the enormous success of her previously shared singles ‘Friday The 13th’, ‘Ur The Party’, ‘Take Me To LA’ and ‘Overwhelming’ throughout the year, Oxfordshire-based singer and songwriter BETSIE GØLD is back once again with her self-described “BITCH PØP” sound on a more sombre single ‘Birthday Sadness’.

Co-written alongside regular collaborator Kaity Rae, who also co-wrote two singles on The Shires’ latest LP ‘Good Years’, ‘Birthday Sadness’ sees her cap off 2020 with a far more heartfelt and emotionally-charged release. Capturing more of that same textured and sweeping aesthetic, this new offering sees her in a more intimate light as she swoons and serenades us through this wistful pop stunner.

Speaking about the new release, she said,I wrote ‘Birthday Sadness’ with Kaity Rae in our first session since lockdown. The track originally started off pretty upbeat with completely different production, but we couldn’t seem to get anything down. The more we spoke about how this year has made having a birthday even more scary because it’s like we’ve had the entire year taken from us with nothing to show for it, the more the lyrics poured out. Kaity re-did the production and the rest came together. We’re constantly led to believe that time is running out and that everything has to be figured out so young. It’s an impossible ideal. Every year (especially one like this) birthdays make you face everything that has or hasn’t changed, good or bad. I miss the years of not being able to sleep because I was so excited for my birthday, because the only thing that mattered was the party, presents and cake.”

BETSIE’s musical palate is wide ranging and encompasses Blondie, Goo Goo Dolls and Bon Jovi through to Billie Eilish, Nina Nesbitt, and Dagny. The self-taught guitarist honed her craft on Taylor Swift’s catalogue and set her mind to pursuing music after a school friend introduced her to Bon Jovi’s biggest hits. A few years later her tenacity and determination secured her an opening spot in front of 20,000 people on the Canadian leg of Bon Jovi’s tour. Since then, she’s played the main stage at Truck Festival, Reading Festival and has formed an electric creative partnership with producer Kaity Rae, who she describes as her musical soulmate, with the two working together on all of BETSIE GØLD’s tracks.

BETSIE coined the term “BITCH PØP” when asked to describe her music, stating, “I make the type of music I want to make and I’m reclaiming that word as a woman in music. It’s liberating creating whatever you want and not restricting yourself”
