INTERVIEW: Eli Greeneyes

Hi Eli, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I’ve been alright hey! Just writing lots as per usual and hanging out with fam back in WA which I’m happy about, got an exemption and came back not only because of COVID but my dad and nan were quite sick! So I’m lucky to be here really! though I do miss Melbourne a lot where I started this project!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “21”?

21 is about changing and growing into yourself as a an individual and young adult, and being bloody terrified in the process. I also realised that I had been idling at 150 percent of my energy my whole life out of trauma and anxiety of things that happened to me as a child, not really out of excitement! I was just depressed and quite a careful almost jumpy kid…. and looking back on that at the time of writing this song I felt like ahad been wasting time! I wrote this one in a bout 15 minutes in its entirety. First thing that came out was that “HELLO, IM A WEIRDO HERES A SONG” part and I thought that would be the verse and I would then write a chorus n all that. I just couldn’t get that first bit outta my head so I just sang it again after I just fumbled the verse out and was like “oh! it’s done”. Those are my favourite ones, the songs that come out so quick it’s almost like somebody dropped the whole song at once in your lap……That’s why I always say EARS TO THE SKY!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No not really, I kind of sum a lot of shit up in my head before I write I think. It’s always about a feeling and all those things in my life that make me feel that way. I’m always referencing lots of storys and situations, kinda rambling the whole way I guess!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Honestly I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to videos so I had to learn about how you get the sped up looking shots and what frame rates blah blah all that bullshit. This whole clip was just my mate Connor maher and my girlfriend Alex maher and I just trying stuff out till it looked decent! Quite a spontaneous and amateur process really…ahahha But it turned out mad!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process happened fairly quickly and the only part I had to do again was the vocal cause the more I sing the more comfortable I am with how I sound! I just have to rinse myself and share the emotion of each song in its absolute potency otherwise whats the bloody point!

What role does WA play in your music?

Well I started the project and wrote the first 10 or so songs in Melbourne when i was living there for a few years! but I grew up in WA so my whole childhood and upbringing and experiences in school happened in perth. So it definitely has a lot to do with my music! I also toured and released music under another project previously and played in other bands too!

How has Jamiroaqui and The Kooks influenced your writing?

They haven’t actually, I never really listened to either of them much at all! I grew up with RADIOHEAD, OASIS, AVRIL LAVIGNE, ALANIS MORRISETTE, THE VERVE, BLINK 182, SINEAD O’CONNOR AND PRINCE! But I would say a lot of HIP HOP artists have inspired me lyrically and A LOt of bands like MCLUSKY and THE STROKES. Anything  with a MEGA chorus.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

BLOODY OATH! I write all the time so there’s always gonna be new music without a doubt! I’m so excited about future releases.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet but we are going to be picking a release order soon from all the finished tunes and they’re sounding MEGA!

What else is happening next in Eli Greeneyes’ world?

I Want more tattoos but that costs money, HEY! that’s a line for a song! YOU WATCH! that’ll be in there somewhere keep an ear out!
